Umbreon

Umbreon (Japanese: ブラッキー, HepburnBurakkii) (UM-bree-on[1]) is a Dark-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II. It is one of the eight possible final forms of Eevee, an evolution resulting from leveling up with high friendship during nighttime. It is also one of the player's first partner Pokémon alongside Espeon in Pokémon Colosseum.

Umbreon concept artwork

Umbreon is a quadrupedal, mammalian feliform Pokémon that resembles a black cat with some lagomorph traits. Umbreon has mainly sleek black fur with luminescent yellow rings encircling its ears and tail and round yellow circular patterns on its forehead and on each of its legs. Its physical characteristics resemble a feline, with a short muzzle and a small triangular nose, but its large ears are reminiscent to a hare or a rabbit. It has red eyes, and unlike the rest of the Eeveelutions, it also has visible black-colored oval-shaped pupils that often appear slit, as well as patches of black fur of a darker shade around its eyes. Umbreon has a slightly bushy black tail with a single yellow ring encircling its thickest part; the tail thins out at the tip. Umbreon has small sharp fangs, and can be seen when it opens its mouth, similar to Sylveon.

A Shiny Umbreon has blue ring markings, its fur is a deep shade of grey, and its eyes are bright yellow.

Behavior

Like other Eeveelutions, Umbreon are carnivorous Pokémon, known as solitary predators, and will stalk prey silently during the night. When an Umbreon senses an enemy's presence, it waits for its enemy to come into range. It kills its prey by pouncing, then biting its throat with its small, sharp fangs before eating it.

Once captured and tamed, they are very protective of their Trainers and will chase aggressors with Pursuit.

As it is an evolution of Eevee relying on friendship, Umbreon are rarely found in the wild, and are more commonly sighted in urban areas, where they are occasionally seen sleeping on rooftops during the day, and walking across roofs at night as they scan their environment from above for prey (as they have the feline ability to climb).

Natural abilities

Upon being exposed to the moonlight, the patterns on their fur glow and fill up with energy. Umbreon releases the energy at night or when they are excited, and can use it to strike fear into bystanders to scare them away. The patterns on their fur gain a dim golden light when about to attack. As its power is based on moonlight, Umbreon cannot battle well during the daytime and therefore serves as the polar opposite to its counterpart Espeon.

Umbreon can spray a cloud of toxic gas from their sweat glands to paralyze their aggressor when agitated. Umbreon are also nocturnal and have powerful night vision. The primarily black color of their fur also allows them to easily hide and conceal themselves in the dark.

Evolution

Umbreon is one of the eight evolved forms from Eevee, if it levels up at night with high friendship. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, using a Moon Shard will evolve Eevee into Umbreon.

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, Umbreon evolves with a Lunar Ribbon.

Trivia

Beta umbreon
  • Umbreon, alongside Espeon, is the first new Eeveelution addition after the original Generation I trio (Vaporeon, Flareon, and Jolteon).
  • Umbreon is the only non-Psychic-type Pokémon with the ability Synchronize.
  • Umbreon is the only pure Dark-type Pokémon in Generation II.
  • Despite being able to spray poison according to its Pokédex entires, it only knows Toxic via TM06.
    • However, in the beta version of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Umbreon was a Poison-type Pokémon that could be evolved from Eevee with the scrapped "Poison Stone".
  • Umbreon is the first Dark-type Pokémon in National Dex order, and is right next to another one.
  • Umbreon cannot learn any Special moves via leveling up.
  • Due to hardware limitations of the Game Boy Color, in the Generation II games, Umbreon's eyes share the same color palette as the rings on its body, making them appear Yellow. This also applies to its Shiny, appearing blue as well.
  • Umbreon has unique red eyes, and is the only Eeveelution with slit black pupils. The rest, including Eevee, have a white highlight in their eyes resembling pupils.
  • Umbreon is one of the 11 Generation II Pokémon that is an evolution of a Generation I Pokémon.
  • Similar to Espeon, Umbreon was originally going to have gender differences starting in Generation IV, with females having smaller ears, but this idea was ultimately scrapped.
  • Due to its popularity among fans, Umbreon ranked 5th, among all Pokémon, in the official Pokémon of the Year 2020 poll by The Pokémon Company, higher than every other Eeveelution as well as Pikachu (who was ranked 20th). It also ranked 1st among all Johto Pokémon.
  • This Eeveelution is one of the two alongside Sylveon to have visible small fangs seen when their mouths are open.
  • Umbreon is one of the three evolutions of Eevee based on strong friendship, alongside Espeon and Sylveon.
  • Umbreon can be seen as one of the Pokémon shown in Pokémon Stadium 2's opening scene.

Origin

According to Motofumi Fujiwara, a key person at Game Freak, Eevee was based on a vague childhood experience he had. He described seeing an "indefinable creature" and that Eevee was based on a drawing of all that he could remember of it. Though it wasn't based on any distinct animal, Fujiwara mentioned that Eevee reminded him of a fluffy cat or dog-like creature. Each one of Eevee's evolutions are based on the same design but are made to resemble their type.[2]

Additionally, it is most likely based on a black cat, due to its short muzzle and body structure. Umbreon's Japanese name, Blacky, could be a reference to black cats, as they are considered lucky in Japan, but unlucky in Western countries. Its rings could represent Egyptian lunar markings and jewelry, associated with the Egyptian goddess Bastet, who was originally a Lioness goddess of the sun, but Greeks occupying Ancient Egypt had her changed into the goddess of the moon. Furthering the lunar theme, Metamorphoses is a narrative poem that involves the Roman Goddess of the moon, Diana, can change into the form of a cat as she flees to Egypt.

Its ears are rabbit-like, which is likely a reference to the Moon Hare of Japanese folklore.

Etymology

Umbreon comes from "Umbra", which means "shade" or "shadow", and "Eon", which means a long period of time.

Its Japanese name, Blacky, is transcribed as Burakkii, and comes from "black" and "lucky" (in Japan, black cats, which served as the inspiration for Umbreon, are considered an omen of good luck). It may also be inspired from 月 (tsuki, Japanese for moon), a reference for being the Moonlight Pokémon.
