Virizion

Virizion (Japanese: ビリジオン, HepburnBirijion) (vih-RY-zee-un[1]) is a Grass/Fighting-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation V. It forms part of the legendary quartet Swords of Justice, along with Cobalion, Terrakion, and Keldeo.

Biology

Physiology

Virizion is a quadrupedal deer-like Pokémon. The top part of its slender body is covered in lush green leaf-like fur, while its underbelly is a pastel-green hue. It has pink-tipped leaves growing from its neck, and a fringe of green leaves protruding from beneath its shoulders. It has long curled green horns atop its head. Its face is deer-like in appearance, and it has pinkish eyes. It appears to be wearing armored boots with pink tips at the top and gray markings at its toes.

Iron Leaves is a futuristic variant of Virizion.

Behavior

Virizion does not typically trust humans. When humans destroyed its homeland, Virizion fought them alongside its Pokémon friends, along with Cobalion and Terrakion. Many stories depict it as initially ambivalent about its allies and hesitant to fully embrace its role in the Swords of Justice. However, such tales always reveal in some way or another that Virizion truly does care about its companions, but simply does not enjoy expressing it. When Keldeo joins the group in most versions of the myth, Virizion is at first the most hesitant about the new member, but eventually grows closer to the protégé.

Natural Abilities

Virizion's horns are extremely sharp. It is incredibly swift and uses whirlwind-like movements to confuse its foes. The gray stripe produces a green sword-like horn as seen in Kyurem vs the Sword of Justice.

Evolution

Virizion does not evolve.

Trivia

  • Virizion, Terrakion, and Cobalion all have the same eye shape.
  • Virizion's Shiny form seems to have inverted colors of its normal coloration. The body/fur color is pink, and the accessory stripes are green.
  • Virizion is the first Legendary grass type Pokémon.
  • Though being based on one of Three Musketeers and being genderless, Virizion is depicted as a female in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates of Infinity, as well as having a female voice actor in MS015.
  • Virizion and 3 other Pokémon, Breloom, Chesnaught, and Hisuian Decidueye are the only grass/fighting Pokémon.
  • Virizion, along with the rest of the Swords of Justice, were the first quadrupedal Fighting-type Pokémon.
  • Virizion can be mistaken for the telecommunication company Verizon as the 2 names sound similar.

Origin

Virizion is likely based on a deer or antelope. It could be said that Virizion is the Aramis of the group because it greatly values friendship, just like the character in the novel, The Three Musketeers.

Etymology

Virizion comes from viridian (a shade of green) and champion. It may also incorporate amazon, referring to Virizion's feminine appearance and the Amazon rainforest/the mythological warrior women of the same name.
