Bisharp

Bisharp (Japanese: キリキザン, HepburnKirikizan) (BIH-sharp[1]) is a Dark/Steel-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V. It is the evolved form of Pawniard and evolves into Kingambit.

Biology

Physiology

Bisharp is a tall humanoid-looking warrior-like Pokémon. Its body is heavily armored and appears to be made of metal. Like its pre-evolution, Pawniard, Bisharp has a helmet-like red and gray dome on its forehead with a large and very sharp double-edged yellow blade protruding from its forehead and extending down the back of its head. It has small, glaring eyes with black pupils and a yellow face with a visible frowning mouth. Its torso and abdomen are deep gray with three vertical segments and two sharp, crescent-shaped blades encircling its chest and abdominal sections. It has armored red shoulders with thin black arms and glove-like white hands with two fingers and blades on its elbows. Its legs are powerfully-built and red in color, and its feet (which look like armored boots) are white with a vertical segment running through each.

A shiny Bisharp has the red colors replaced with blue and the metal turns to a more saturated gold colour.

Behavior

A Bisharp is always the leader of a pack of Pawniard, challenging another Bisharp to become the alpha of the pack. The loser, either the original pack leader or the newly evolved one, gets casted off. After a Bisharp becomes leader, it will closely monitor and inspect every Pawniard in its pack so that none of its Pawniard dare to betray it. Groups that are defeated in territorial disputes will be absorbed to the packs of the winning Bisharp. However, no matter how strong a Bisharp is, it will have to forcibly retire if its head blade is chipped.

The alpha Bisharp will always take command of a pack of Pawniard to track down and subdue prey before finishing it off without mercy.

In the Galar region, Bisharp and Fraxure are sworn enemies of each other, as they conflict over sharpening stones whenever they find one in their territories.

In the Paldea region, Bisharp are terrified of Tinkatuff, as the Pokémon is somehow able to overwhelm them despite their small size, who then proceed to use their blades for their own hammer. Bisharp in the region are also capable of evolving into Kingambit, which is only occurs to the strongest Bisharps. Bisharp who report under a Kingambit respect its orders, knowing that insubordination is not allowed.

Natural abilities

Bisharp are protected by their razor sharp and sturdy armor full of honed blades. They are also known for their nimble agility that can deftly finish off their prey in a matter of short time.

Evolution

Bisharp is the evolved form of Pawniard when it reaches level 52.

In Generation IX, it can further evolve into Kingambit by holding a Leader's Crest and defeat three other wild Bisharp which lead their own hordes of Pawniard.

Trivia

  • Bisharp, along with its pre-evolution and evolution, is the first and only Pokémon to have a Dark/Steel-type combination.
    • Interestingly, the Dark and Steel types were both introduced in Generation II.
    • Bisharp and its pre-evolution were the only Pokémon to have ever double resisted Ghost-type moves. As of Pokémon X&Y, this is no longer possible since Steel no longer resists that type.
    • They are also currently the only Steel dual-type Pokémon without a double resistance.
  • Bisharp appears in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, where he's a chief guard of the road to Verdant Court and has at least four Pawniard in his squadron.
  • Out of all the Steel-type Pokémon to evolve from a certain level, Bisharp evolves from its pre-evolved form at the highest level (Level 52).

Origin

Bisharp appears to be based on a samurai, knight, or bandit from Japanese culture, the latter possibly being the reason for its dark typing. Its thief inspiration may make it based on a higher-class thief or gang leader due to hunting in groups and commanding Pawniard. Its body also resemble the types of armor that were worn by feudal Japan infantry. It also resembles a bishop chess piece with its evolution from Pawniard possibly deriving from pawn promotion, a technique in chess where a player can replace a pawn they've moved all the way to the back row of the board with a higher-ranking piece their opponent has captured.

Since many Game Freak staff are self-confessed huge fans of the Godzilla movies, they created Bisharp with the inspiration from Jet Jaguar, a heroic gigantic mecha robot who fought alongside Godzilla in the 1973 film "Godzilla vs Megalon".

Bisharp also originates from various Japanese monster movie villains known as kaijin.

Etymology

Bisharp comes from the chess piece bishop and sharp. It may also come from bisect (to cut something in two).

Its Japanese name, Kirikizan, likely comes from 切り刻む (kirikizamu, to chop up), 斬 (zan, to kill), and possibly 残酷 (zankoku, cruel).

Names in other languages

  • English, Italian and Spanish: Bisharp
  • French: Scalproie
  • German: Caesurio
  • Chinese: 劈斩司令 (mainland, official) / 劈斬司令 (HK & Taiwan)
  • Korean: 절각참
