Chikorita concept art

Chikorita is a small dinosaur-like Pokémon, particularly resembling a Sauropoda. It is of light green color and its eyes are dull red. Around its neck are tiny buds that have the ability to shoot out into long vines. Its most notable feature's the large leaf on the top of its head. It has four short legs with one toenail on each foot.

Behavior

Chikorita are docile and friendly, spending a lot of time in the sun to soak up the sun's rays. Because of this, they spend most of their time peacefully sunbathing. Their leaves are highly sensitive to temperature and humidity. They love bright, sunny weather--in fact, one of the only times trainers may their see Chikorita upset is when the Pokémon are prevented from going out on beautiful days.

One loves to be pet on its leaf, unlike the buds on its neck. Thanks to their calm nature, it is no surprise that Chikorita continue to be popular Johtonian starter Pokémon.

Natural abilities

Chikorita can use a few more natural abilities. Vines can be shot out of its neck from the tiny buds that circle it, and it can create a large number of leaves from the one large leaf on the top of its head. Chikorita's leaf on top of its head also has calming abilities.

Evolution

Chikorita evolves into Bayleef at level 16 and Meganium at level 32.

Trivia

  • Due to its leaf, Chikorita is the tallest out of all the Grass starter type Pokémon.
  • Chikorita has the similar cry to Igglybuff, but Igglybuff has a low pitch and Chikorita is more high pitched.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Chikorita is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Razor Leaf.
  • Originally, shiny Chikorita was orange. But in later generations, its color was changed to yellow.
  • The leaf on Chikorita's head had a bite taken out of it during Gold and Silver's development stage, just like Bayleef's final design. But Chikorita's leaf bite ended up getting removed later on.

Origin

Like the rest of its evolutionary family, Chikorita is based on a sauropod. It also resembles a pear with legs. The leaf on its head resembles a ponytail.

Etymology

Chikorita's name is derived from "chicory", a plant, combined with the feminine Spanish suffix "-ita" for something small or young.
