Hippowdon

Hippowdon (Japanese: カバルドン, HepburnKabarudon) (hip-POW-don[1]) is a Ground-Type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology

Physiology

It has a dark gray back and muzzle with several holes in them. Sand often spills out of the ports on its back and its nostrils. This sand is stored internally and is used to create twisters when attacking. It has a large, rounded snout, a mouth filled with peg-like teeth, and red eyes. Hippowdon has black feet with four blunt claws each.

Gender differences

Male Hippowdon are black and yellow-tan while females are completely black.

Behavior

It is short-tempered and may hold its mouth agape as a display of strength. Hippowdon's massive jaws are capable of crushing cars. It has a symbiotic relationship with Dwebble, which clears any stones stuck in its ports. Drapion are known to stay away from Hippowdon. Excess sand is expelled out of Hippowdon's ports to create room for fresh sand to ingest, in order for it to stay healthy.

Evolution

Hippowdon evolves from Hippopotas as of level 34.

    Trivia

    • The female Hippowdon has not made an appearance in the anime series yet.

    Origin

Hippopotas appears to be based on a hippopotamus while also possibly being based on the Bahamut, a creature said to have the head of a hippo while also relating to sand and earthquakes. Its sand coming out of its body may reference the "blood sweat" often associated with hippos (though the secretion is neither blood nor sweat).

    Etymology

Hippowdon comes from hippopotamus, power and don (Spanish for lord and Greek for tooth).
