Phanpy

Phanpy (Japanese: ゴマゾウ, HepburnGomazou) (FAN-pee[1]) is a Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

Biology

Physiology

Phanpy is light-blue in color with red pads on its big ears. It most closely resembles an elephant. Its feet have one toe each.

Behavior

Phanpy nests, essentially vertical dirt pits with a shallow edge to climb out of, can be found near rivers and waterholes. They will mark surrounding trees with their trunks to signal that these areas have been claimed. In the early morning, Phanpy can be seen showering together in rivers, using their snouts as nozzles. They dry themselves off in the sun over the course of the day. Phanpy are very affectionate and playful Pokémon. Though small, they are strong enough to carry adult humans on their backs. They will often “play” with their trainers by charging into them, but the force of their impacts can be enough to send their trainers flying. Alternatively, they will knock things around with their trunk for fun; this pastime generally can be very destructive to the personal belongings of humans. They can easily lift over 150 lbs (68 kg) with their trunks and can also toss objects of similar weights dozens of yards away. Consequently, these affectionate Pokémon can also be very dangerous to be around as well.

Evolution

Phanpy evolves into Donphan once it reaches level 25.

Ash Phanpy
Ash Phanpy Egg

Ash gets a Phanpy after his egg hatches. It eventually evolves into Donphan. Ash got the Phanpy in Extreme Pokémon and it hatched in Hatching a Plan.

Trivia

  • In the Beta Version of Gold & Silver, Phanpy's beta name was Trunpet.
  • Phanpy can be seen as a counterpart to Teddiursa. Both are singular-typed Pokémon introduced in Generation II and are version exclusives in Gold & Silver. Both can evolve once and both have the same catch rate and so do their evolutions. Both of them share the same BST and are often mistaken for Baby Pokémon.
  • It doesn't learn any moves from its type through leveling.
  • Ironically, although the Pokedex entries state that Phanpy shower each other with water, it is vulnerable to Water-Moves.

Origin

Phanpy appears to be based on an elephant calf. Its Ground-type may come from how elephants sometimes give themselves "sand baths" to prevent sunburn.

Etymology

Phanpy derives from elephant.
