Cherubi

Cherubi (Japanese: チェリンボ, HepburnCherinbo) (chuh-ROO-bee[1]) is a Grass-type Pokémon that was introduced in Generation IV. Its first appearance was in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Biology

Physiology

Cherubi's biology is very simple. It has a spherical body with two faces, two pairs of eyes, and a single set of stubby feet. The first pair of eyes rest on the main portion of the Pokémon's body and are usually kept open. In contrast, the second pair are almost always closed, with them being on a smaller 'ball' that is attached to the main body by a green stem. The smaller ball's face is typically kept in a sleepy, gleeful expression with an open mouth. Besides the stem, most of Cherubi's body is a deep cerise in color, though it turns red when hit with sunlight. Otherwise, the only differences are a plum-colored line that runs down the bigger head and eyes that are a dark red with white pupils.

While the small ball on Cherubi's body might simply look like a second head, it also serves an important biological function: the ball is full of nutrients that help the Pokémon grow. Without it, the Cherubi would be unable to evolve. To grow, it sucks nutrients from the ball to make itself bigger, with the ball shriveling and shrinking the more it gets drained of substance.

Behavior

Despite its small size, Cherubi can often be seen nimbly dashing and jumping about. This is because like Bounsweet, the Cherry Pokémon's nutrient ball often causes it to be targeted by other Pokémon. It's said to be very sweet and delicious, often causing bird Pokémon to attack it. Starly in particular are notorious for preying upon Cherubi, as they sometimes try to peck the ball off. Ironically, the ball detaches on its own when Cherubi sucks it dry of nutrients, so it becomes food for other Pokémon regardless of if it manages to escape predation.

Otherwise, like many Grass type Pokémon, Cherubi loves to sunbathe. It also has a tendency to hide in trees to escape being preyed on, especially Honey Trees. In fact, they can be found hiding in said trees all over the Sinnoh region. To lure them out, one must slather honey on the bark, enticing the Pokémon to feed.

Evolution

Cherubi evolves into Cherrim upon reaching level 25.

Trivia

Origin

Cherubi is based on a cherry. While the Pokémon's ball is said to taste very sweet, real-life cherries can have a variety of flavors, from sour to tart.

Etymology

Cherubi comes from the words cherry, cherubim (a small angel), ruby (a shade of red) and cherub (class of angel).
