Parasect

Parasect (Japanese: パラセクト, HepburnParasekuto) (PAR-i-sect[1]) is a Bug/Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Parasect concept art

Parasect, like its pre-evolution Paras, is a crab-like Pokémon. Parasect has a large red-orange-spotted mushroom on its back and six legs. Parasect's two front legs are larger than its other four, which are used for gripping its prey.

Behavior

It has been shown in Pokédex entries that Parasect gather in groups to feed off of the nutrients from trees (mostly the bark and roots). their fungi entirely overtake their bodies and minds. Parasect dwell in damp places due to their fungi's own preferences for moisture (they often compete with Shiinotic for land). They are highly aggressive.Throughout their lives, the mushrooms continues to drain their hosts until there is nothing left. At that point, they scatter spores over their hosts’ eggs to restart the cycle. If a Parasect's mushroom is entirely removed, the Pokémon enters a comatose state indefinitely.

Natural abilities

Parasect can have two of the following abilities, either Effect Spore or Dry Skin. Effect Spore allows Parasect to have a 10% chance to paralyze, burn or poison a foe. Dry Skin allows Parasect to recover HP when it is raining and lose HP when it is sunny.

Evolution

Parasect is the evolved form of Paras as of level 24.

Goh Parasect

Trivia

  • The Pokémon Stadium Pokédex entry states that Parasect's spores are used as medicine in China, showing that there are similarities in regions with the real world and Pokémon world. China is also referenced in one of Arcanine's Pokédex entries.
  • Until Generation II, Parasect, and its pre-evolution were the only known Pokémon to have a double weakness to Fire.
  • Parasect had the same cry as Mewtwo, but at a lower pitch before Generation VI.
  • Parasect and its pre-evolution Paras have a unique egg group combo (Bug & Grass).
  • It shares a species name with Foongus. They are both known as The Mushroom Pokémon.
  • In Generation I, Paras and Parasect were the only dual Grass-types with Grass as their secondary type.
  • In Generation I, Parasect and its pre-evolution were the first Pokémon with 3 4x weaknesses (Fire, Flying and Poison (since Bug was weak to Poison in Gen I).
  • It shares its name with a monster from the 1995 adaptation of Kamen Rider Black RX.
  • It and it's pre-evolution's cry is very similar to Mew and Mewtwo's.
  • Parasect, along with its pre-evolution Paras, is the only Pokémon that has 5x weakness because of its ability Dry Skin.

Origin

Parasect appears to be based on a cicada nymph with some traits of a crab.

The mushrooms growing on its back is based on fungi such as Ophiocordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris, which are known to parasitize and mind-control insects. They are also based on the Tochukaso, which is an aphrodisiac that can be sold at a high price.

Etymology

Parasect comes from "parasite" and "insect".

Names in other languages

  • Japanese: Parasect
  • French: Parasect
  • Spanish: Parasect
  • German: Parasek (mix of "parasit" (parasite) and "insekt" (insect))
