Manaphy

Manaphy (Japanese: マナフィ, Hepburn: Manafi) (man-UH-fee^[1]) is a Water-type Mythical Pokémon.^[1] It is, along with Phione, the only Mythical Pokémon that can breed.

Biology

Physiology

Manaphy is a small, blue, aquatic Pokémon. It has stubby feet and club-like arms that are longer than its body. Manaphy has a red gem on its chest, and a yellow dot below the gem. Manaphy has an onion-shaped head with a pair of long blue antennae, which have small spheres on the end. Manaphy's irises are dark blue, although the outermost portions of its eyes are yellow, with two eyelashes on each eye and yellow dots on the tips.

Behavior

Manaphy are friendly creatures to both humans and Pokémon. They have the propensity to swim long distance in order to return to the cold deep sea that they belong. Rumors say that in rare occasions, Manaphy will visit Hisui's shorelines in ancient times.

Natural abilities

Manaphy has the ability to telepathically communicate with people and other Pokémon. It is also renowned for using Heart Swap to swap bodies between humans and Pokémon.

Eighty percent of Manaphy's body is made of water and is highly susceptible to its environment. One of these reactions is that when Manaphy reproduces in an ocean that's warmer than those that they are native to, the child will be a Phione as opposed to another Manaphy.

Evolution

Manaphy does not evolve.

Trivia

• Although Manaphy's Pokédex number appears after Phione's and Manaphy can breed with a Ditto to produce Phione, Phione does not evolve into Manaphy.
• Manaphy is known as the "Prince of the Sea". In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, the Manaphy that appeared was referred to as a male, however Manaphy are still genderless for gameplay purposes.
• Manaphy is the only mythical Pokémon that can breed.
  • When it breeds with a Ditto, they make a Phione. Phione can also breed with a Ditto to produce another Phione.
• In Super Smash Bros., Manaphy is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Heart Swap.
• In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, it is possible to have Manaphy on the team roster during the cutscene when Manaphy comes to Sharpedo Bluff to reveal the Marine Resort.

Origin

Manaphy is based on a sea angel, a type of free-swimming, predatory sea slug that typically lives in polar oceans.

Etymology

Manaphy may come from mana (a spiritual life force) and fairy or sea.
