Beedrill

Beedrill (Japanese: スピアー, HepburnSpear) (BEE-dril[1]) is a Bug/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Beedrill is an insect-like Pokémon with the appearance of a very large wasp. However, unlike a wasp, Beedrill only has four limbs, with the front-most limbs featuring two large, lance-like stingers. A third stinger is located on its rear end. The shiny version of a Beedrill is a light green color with blue eyes instead of red.

A Mega evolved Beedrill's antennae now resemble the letter 'T', and its eyes become longer and sleeker. It gains a third pair of wings with black markings on top. Its stingers now resemble javelins now, and its only 2 legs were also turned into conical stingers with the same pattern as its abdomen. A similar structure joins its head and thorax and its third stinger has turned pale yellow.

Behavior

Beedrill is extremely territorial and will attack anyone who gets too close to their hive. They are aggressive Pokémon and collectively attack the people around them. As seen in "Challenge of the Samurai", they are also concerned with the welfare of their previous forms. Beedrill are also vital to the ecosystems of forests in Kanto and Johto, helping prevent populations of Pokémon such as Paras and Pidgey from growing uncontrollably. Trainers traveling in Beedrill territory are strongly advised to bring along Pokémon that can handle Beedrill and their attacks, such as Twineedle and Poison Jab, as well as to bring along a number Pecha Berries and Antidotes.

Natural abilities

Beedrill has the ability Swarm, which increases any Bug-type attacks by 1.5 if the user's HP drops below 1/3 its max amount. Its hidden ability, Sniper, makes critical hits dealt by it stronger.

According to the Pokédex, Beedrill can fly at great speeds and can attack in swarms. Additionally, its three stingers all secrete a toxic poison, with the stinger on its rear being the most venomous.

Mega Beedril's arms secrete fast acting poison, used to immobilize foes, then finishes them off with its long acting poison from its abdomen.

Evolution

Beedrill is the final evolution of Weedle and evolves from Kakuna at level 10. Beedrill gains a Mega Evolution, Mega Beedrill, in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.

Appearances

Anime

Beedrill first appeared at the end of Ash Catches a Pokemon where one flies right by Misty's head, and she freaks out and hurries after Ash. Their first feature episode was Challenge of the Samurai, where a number of Beedrill evolved from Kakuna and took Ash Ketchum's Metapod.

A running gag throughout the course of the series features characters disturbing a Beedrill's hive and then being chased by the swarm of Beedrill.

Ash owned a Beedrill for one episode in The Bug Stops Here. He caught this Pokémon during a Bug-Catching Contest. It was then given to Casey, since she is a fan of yellow-black striped Pokémon. Casey is seen using this Beedrill in the episode Those Darn Electabuzz.

Trivia

  • Originally, Beedrill's name was supposed to have one letter "L", rather than two.
  • Despite being able to fly, Beedrill is not a Flying-type nor does it have the ability Levitate, making it susceptible to Ground-type moves.
  • Beedrill is the only member of its evolution family to appear in Pokémon Conquest.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Beedrill is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Take Down.
  • Beedrill can be seen as a parallel to Butterfree. Both of their unevolved stages evolve at the same levels, and have metamorphosis-like evolution.
    • Also, while Beedrill is a version exclusive of Black and Black 2, Butterfree is exclusive to White and White 2.
  • The both share a base stat total of 395.
  • Despite having "bee" in its name, Beedrill more closely resembles a wasp.
  • Mega Beedrill has the highest Attack and Speed base stats of all Poison-type Pokémon. It also has the lowest Special Attack base stat of all Poison-type and Mega Evolved Pokémon, the lowest Defense of all Mega Evolved Pokémon, and the lowest single base stat of any Mega Evolved Pokémon.
  • Mega Beedrill is the only Mega Evolved Pokémon whose Special Attack is lower than that of its base form.

Origin

Beedrill is based on different types of stinging insects, namely bees, hornets, or wasps. It most resembles the Asian Giant Hornet. It's arms resembles lances or spears (with the latter being it's Japanese name). The lance-like appearance is also more noticeable in its Mega Evolution. It's Mega Evolution also gains a more mecha-like designs, possibly making it appear like a construction machine given it's yellow, black, and red coloration and the 'drill' part of its English name.

Etymology

Beedrill is a combination of the words "bee" and "drill".

Its Japanese name, "Spear", is in reference to its spear-like stingers. By reversing the name without romanization, it is pronounced similar to Apis, the genus of the honey bee.

Names in other languages

  • French: "Dardargnan" is a combination of the word "dard" (sting) and the name "D'artagnan" from the famous fencer appearing in Alexandre Dumas' novel The Three Musqueteers.
  • German: "Bibor" comes from "Biene" (bee) and "Bohrer" (drill).
