Skuntank

Skuntank (Japanese: スカタンク, HepburnSukatanku) (SKUN-tank[1]) is a Poison/Dark-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology

Physiology

Skuntank resembles a fat white and purple skunk. It has a tail that covers its humped back and head, a plump belly, orange outlining near its eyes, an orange nose, and small fangs coming out of the side of its mouth. Its ears resemble cat ears.

Behavior

Skuntank cannot see upwards very well, and are thus very susceptible to aerial attacks. Skuntank dig their nests into flat ground, marking the surrounding area to warn intruders of their presence. Skuntank are distrustful Pokémon. They dislike humans in their territory and will try to stay away if possible. Skuntank have been known to ignite their sprays to break apart walls of Combee and access valuable Honey. They may either fight or flee when they sense danger.

Natural abilities

Skuntank have scent glands on the tips of their tails rather than the bases. This enables them to aim at foes much better, since they can actually see where they are shooting. Skuntank can spray their noxious fluids from a distance of over 160 feet (50 meters). Unlike Stunky, however, the smell doesn't wear off after a day or so; instead, it only worsens the longer the liquid is allowed to fester on its target. The exact odor varies based on the Skuntank's diet. The fluid produced by their scent glands is highly flammable; Skuntank can ignite the spurts of liquid that they spray in order to use the move Flamethrower in battle, much to the surprise of many opponents.

Evolution

Skuntank is the evolved form of Stunky. Stunky will evolve into Skuntank starting from level 34.

    Trivia

    • Skuntank and its pre-evolution Stunky are the only Dark-type Pokémon with the ability Stench.
    • Skuntank is Jupiter's signature Pokémon. This may be a visual pun on the term "gas giant" (the type of planet Jupiter's namesake is), as Skuntank is a rather large, plump skunk Pokémon, and skunks are generally associated with bad odors and related things such as flatulence.

    Origin

Skuntank is based on a skunk, a honey badger (a mustelid with a similar plump appearance and ability to spray unpleasant-smelling liquid from glands in its rump), and a pompadour, a hairstyle often associated with Japanese delinquents, which could be why it has the Dark typing.

    Etymology

Skuntank and Sukatanku come from skunk, tank (referring to its stomach as a storage for its spray, its stout, large-bellied build, and its attack power), and stank. Sukatanku may also come from scat (animal feces).
