Dugtrio

Dugtrio (Japanese: ダグトリオ, HepburnDagutorio) (dug-TREE-oh[1]) is a Ground-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It has a Ground/Steel-type Alolan Form introduced in Generation VII.

Biology

Physiology

Dugtrio resembles a congregated trio of Diglett. Although they look the same, the heights are varied. The middle body is the tallest, the left body is the second tallest, and the right body is the shortest. The holes that Dugtrio make are bigger due to the increase in size during its evolution. It's brown and it looks similar to a mole, but with a large, pink nose.

Alolan Dugtrio concept

The Alolan form of Dugtrio has developed golden magnetic "hair". The middle body has the longest and curliest hair, while the left body has shorter blond hair and the right body has the shortest and straightest hair. They also have slightly darker body fur.

Both types of Dugtrio have a body, though they do not reveal this to anyone, not even their Trainers.

Behavior

Like Diglett, Dugtrio loathe sunlight. As triplets emerging from the same body, they also share the same thought process as each other. Nonetheless, Dugtrio are more aggressive than Diglett, and they'll try all kinds of methods to attack its enemy or opponents who are digging holes underground from all directions. Druddigon is a known predator of it.

Regardless, Dugtrio are very friendly with humans; Kantonian Dugtrio help people with agriculture, while Alolan Dugtrio are worshipped as feminine deities of the land incarnate regardless of gender. It is rumored that any hair picked up from Alolan Dugtrio will give bad luck. Thus, Alolans who see Kantoian Dugtrio will often be shocked by their lack of "hair".

Dugtrio live underground in caves. However, in Pikachu's Rescue Adventure, they live in hollow trees as well.

Natural abilities

Dugtrio are capable of burrowing over 60 MPH. This strength to do so sometimes triggers earthquakes or tremors.

Alolan Dugtrio have hair that will keep growing. This "hair" is actually thin yet heavy stands of steel, and can be used to detect nearby seismic activity.

Evolution

Dugtrio is the evolved form of Diglett as of level 26.

In the Pokémon Stadium 2 stage, a Dugtrio can be seen on the Ground Terrain situated next to a large rock. Cubone & Pokémon Fossils can also be seen on the Ground Terrain.

Trophy Description

"A Mole Pokemon. It has three heads that seem to all think the same thing. It lives in caves and is skilled at digging--no matter how hard the ground is, it can dig up to 62 miles below the surface. It's among the fastest of Ground-type Pokemon, a characteristic that can be counted on in combat. Its Sand Tomb is an effective attack that prevents opponents from escaping."

Trivia

  • Dugtrio is the first Pokémon to appear in the combined form or in a group (the others being Magneton, Exeggcute, etc.)
  • Dugtrio's Alolan form resembles a full family.
    • In fact, each of them has its individual name: Dug Ashley (ダグアシュリー), Dug Michael (ダグマイケル) and Dug Jessica (ダグジェシカ).
  • When Dugtrio uses Supersonic Skystrike (Flyium-Z) when flying there is a little piece of earth under it.
  • It has the highest base speed of all ground types.
  • It shares its category with Drilbur.
  • Fissure was formerly its signature move.

Origin

Dugtrio may be based on a group of moles, more specifically, moles used in the game Whack-A-Mole which have a much more rounded shape and pop in and out of holes similarly to Dugtrio does.

Its Alolan form and it gaining the Steel-type may reference magnetic sand. Along with this, it may be based on the black sand that is found on some beaches. Its hair may also come from Pele's hair, a type of volcanic glass that forms around Hawaiian volcanoes and appears similarly to clumps of hair. Its hair may also be a pun on "hair metal", a style of metal music.

Etymology

Dugtrio comes from dug (paste tense for 'dig') and trio.
