Vullaby

Vullaby (Japanese: バルチャイ, HepburnBaruchai) (VUL-luh-bye[1]) is a Dark/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology

Physiology

Vullaby is a short, stubby, vulture based Pokémon. It has a skull covering her lower body like a diaper and it has short stubby wings to fly with. It has a small pink head along with a ponytail at the top tied off with a bone.

Vullaby is a female-only species of Pokémon.

Behavior

Vullaby live in harsh badlands that few other Pokémon can be found in. They cannot fly because their wings are small and underdeveloped. Consequently, they have to resort to other methods of protection; their mothers will gather the skulls of deceased Pokémon for them to use as protection, using larger ones as they grow. Siblings will squabble with one another for comfy bones. Partially due to their voracious appetites, Vullaby undergo multiple growth spurts and require new bones each time, with the old ones being passed on to younger chicks. The bones also protect their rears, as these Pokémon are clumsy and often fall while waddling around. However, they are also heavy, so when Vullaby near evolution and prepare to fly, they will discard their skulls.

Vullaby are not picky eaters and will consume whatever their mothers bring back to them or wanders close enough for them to chase. Vullaby also almost always try to pursue prey weaker than themselves, sometimes purely for enjoyment; they quickly will give up chase, however. They do not enjoy walking much, so they will only finish hunting down prey when food is scarce. Despite this, they can often be seen hopping excitedly as they try in vain to take flight. Sometimes, a Vullaby may follow its mother out to scavenge or hunt; this is where it learns to discern weakened prey and salvage bones for later use.

Evolution

Vullaby evolves into Mandibuzz at level 54.

  • Sword

It wears a bone to protect its rear. It often squabbles with others of its kind over particularly comfy bones.

  • Shield

Vullaby grow quickly. Bones that have gotten too small for older Vullaby to wear often get passed down to younger ones in the nest.

  • Scarlet

They tend to guard their posteriors with suitable bones they have found. They pursue weak Pokémon.

  • Violet

Its healthy appetite leads to visible growth spurts. It often has to replace the bones it wears as its size increases.

Trivia

  • It is impossible to get a seen Pokédex entry for Vullaby or Mandibuzz in Pokémon White without trading with another player. In Pokémon White 2, it is also impossible to get a seen Pokédex entry for Vullaby only.
  • Despite Pokédex stating that Vullaby is incapable of flight, it can learn Fly.
  • Vullaby and its evolution, Mandibuzz, are the only Dark-type Pokémon with a 100% female gender ratio.

Origin

Vullaby is based on a vulture chick and a baby, with its "diaper" being a skull. As opposed to Rufflet's influence being on the modern nation of America, with some influences from pre-historic America, Vullaby seems to be based off barbarians. Its behavior and gender ratio could be inspired from harpies.

Etymology

Vullaby comes from the words vulture, lullaby, and baby.

Its Japanese name, Baruchai, is a portmanteau of vulture and child.
