Quilava

Quilava (Japanese: マグマラシ, HepburnMagumarashi) (kwil-LA-va[1]) is the Fire-type First partner Pokémon of the Johto region, evolved from Cyndaquil.

Biology

Physiology

Quilava is a more slender version of its pre-evolution, while also resembling a weasel. It has triangular red eyes and has five red spots (two arranged vertically on its forehead and the other three arrange horizontally on its rear), which is used to emit flames.

Behavior

Quilava retain the general personalities that they had as Cyndaquil, but replace their skittishness with caution. They are extremely wary of new situations, and will react to nearly any sign of danger. However, instead of curling up into balls, Quilava prefer to fight back. Before a battle, a Quilava usually turns its back on its opponents to attack with its flames.

Quilava are also very agile, allowing them to maneuver around attacks thrown at them. They can utilize the move Flame Wheel to defend themselves, leaving behind lingering trails of fire that provide barriers against opponents. In fact, these lines of scorched earth are often signs that a Quilava has recently been in the area.

Natural abilities

Quilava battle with flaming hot air and their back flames. They also have heatproof fur.

Evolution

Quilava is the evolved form of Cyndaquil, and it evolves into Typhlosion at Level 36.

Trivia

  • Starting in Generation VI, Quilava's flames only burn during its animations.
  • Quilava, Typhlosion and Entei are all capable of learning Eruption and share the same category (The Volcano Pokémon). All of them were also introduced in Generation II.

Origin

Quilava's body is similar to most animals in the weasel family, particularly stoats due to its lack of a tail and the fur on its upper body being significantly darker than that on its underbelly. However, the pattern distribution and shape of Quilava's flames closely resembles the quills and crest of the crested porcupine, especially in its 2D sprites. Quilava's appearance is also quite close to a paca (as both have a slender body, spotted skin, and tiny ears); as well as a badger.

Etymology

Quilava comes from the words quill and lava.
