Protect

Protect (Japanese: まもる, HepburnProtect) is a Normal-type move introduced in Generation II. Since its debut, Protect has been TM017, up until Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!, which changed it to TM007. In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, it is TM025, and in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, Protect returns to becoming TM007.

Effect

When used, Protect makes the Pokémon invulnerable for one turn to most attacks, except Shadow Force, Phantom Force, and Feint. Protect cannot guard the user against weather effects such as hail and sandstorm. While Protect can be used subsequently, there is two-thirds of a chance of it being effective, which also goes for Detect, King's Shield, Spiky Shield, Endure, Wide Guard, and Quick Guard. The rate of Protect being effective is reset upon either using a different move or switching to a different Pokémon. In Generation II only, Protect cannot be used if the user has Substitute in effect.

In Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version, there was a glitch in which Thunder while Rain Dance is in effect and Blizzard while Hail is in effect each had 30% chance of penetrating Protect and Detect. It is also possible for a Pokémon with No Guard to hit through Protect in those games.

Since Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, Protect has +4 priority, but in prior games, Protect has +3 priority.

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, Protect grants the status of the same name to the user, blocking most attacks for as long as the status stays active, which usually lasts 3-6 turns. When Feint is used, the protect status is broken early. Pokémon under the protect status skill take damage from items and explosions.
