Aurorus

Aurorus (Japanese: アマルルガ, HepburnAmaruruga) (ah-ROAR-us[1]) is a Rock-Ice-type Fossil Pokémon introduced in Generation VI. It is Tyrantrum's counterpart.

Biology

Physiology

Aurorus is a huge dinosaur-like Pokémon bearing resemblance to the Amargasaurus, Apatosaurus or a Brachiosaurus with light blue colored skin, a teal stomach, and blue eyes. It has many icy gems on the sides of its body and a long, curled tail. When it emits a cry, the thin blue-tipped membrane on its head ripples with a light green color, while it attacks, the membrane turns orange. With the icy crystals that line its sides, Aurorus can freeze the surrounding air and trap its foes in ice.

Behavior

Aurorus are large, slow Pokémon that once inhabited frozen tundras. Because of their harsh environments, they did not have to fear most predators, who could not survive the cold; Aurorus have antifreeze proteins in their blood that enable them to endure freezing temperatures.

Because Aurorus relied primarily on the bitter cold to keep predators away from them, they likely went extinct during an ancient warming period in which much of the world's ice melted. Such an event allowed many predators, who saw the large, yet slow and relatively defensive Aurorus as easy prey, to venture further north into once-icy regions. Scientists have recently discovered a fully-intact Aurorus frozen in a northern glacier; it is believed that the Aurorus froze itself to protect itself from some sort of danger, though the nature of this threat is unknown.

They dwell in prehistoric glaciers and tundras.

Natural abilities

The crystals on these Pokémon chill the surrounding air to temperatures as low as -240°F (-150°C), allowing them to instantly freezing moisture in the air. Aurorus use this ability to form blocks of ice in front of them and block incoming attacks; when threatened, they may also try to encase their foes in ice. These Pokémon can also create aurora-like lights by diffracting light through tiny ice crystals in the air, often howling as they do.

Evolution

Aurorus is an evolved form of Amaura, by leveling up to 39 or above at night.

Trivia

  • Aurorus is the tallest Fossil Pokémon.

Origin

Aurorus resemble a sauropod dinosaur, possibly Amargasaurus due to it being speculated it had frills. Its frills also resemble auroras and may reference the aurora borealis (referencing its Ice type on how Aurora Borealis often appears in snowy biomes). It may also be based on a queen due to the crystals along its body possibly resembling a dress, its frills resembling a headdress, and the crystal on its head resembling a crown or tiara.

Etymology

Aurorus comes from aurora and Amargasaurus.
