Ursaluna

Ursaluna (Japanese: ガチグマ, HepburnGachiguma) (UR-sa-LOO-nuh[1]) is a Ground/Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII. It is the evolution of Ursaring in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and the final evolution of Teddiursa.

Biology

Physiology

Full Moon

Ursaluna is a large, stout, quadrupedal dark-brown bear Pokémon with a brown-grey peat covering the large hump on its back, feet, and round tail. The brown-grey peat has 9 rectangle brown spikes on its back and four spikes around the head. The front feet have five claws each while the back feet have three claws. The face is brown with a light-yellow circle and two clouds of peat at the center and a light-yellow snout with a small black nose.

Blood Moon

Blood Moon Ursaluna shares a similar appearance to its Full Moon variant, however the circle is now in an appropriate red similar to a blood moon without any "clouds" obscuring it. Its left eye is also covered in mud which is said to be as hard as iron.

Behavior

Full Moon

Their stronger limbs help them wade through boggy pits and mires as they search for food. Ursaluna also spend a significant amount of time looking for more peat to bolster their armor. When Ursaluna stand on their hind legs, they shift their peat to balance themselves much like other Pokémon use their tails. They can be found in peatlands and boreal wetlands.

In Hisui, Ursaluna were protectors of the peatlands from which people gathered fuel. Taking too much would anger the resident Ursaluna, so gatherers took great care to moderate their harvests and sometimes even performed small rituals to pay their respects to the Pokémon.

Blood Moon

The Blood Moon Ursaluna is rumored to be a ferocious beast, likely because of the hardships and loneliness it had to endurer for centuries. Appearance wise, it can be indicated to be more aggressive than its normal counterparts, feared by most Pokémon living in Kitakami.

Natural abilities

Full Moon

Ursaluna are known to be good at searching by digging into the ground.

Their compacted peat coverings are able to excellently absorb shocks. Ursaluna can manipulate this peat to cover vulnerable sections of their bodies, making them deceptively adaptive during combat. In the rare event that these hulking Pokémon require speed, they can even redistribute their peat to optimize for agility.

Blood Moon

Blood Moon Ursaluna is the only Pokémon that can learn Blood Moon. Its mud covered eye also allows it to see clearly in the dark.

Evolution

Ursaluna is evolved from Ursaring when it is exposed to a Peat Block during a full moon. As the Peat Block is exclusive to Legends: Arceus, Ursaring cannot evolve in the other games it is present in.

There is only one Blood Moon Ursaluna, and other Ursaring cannot evolve into it.

    Trivia

    Origin

Ursaluna might be inspired by the Ussuri brown bear, which is revered as the "God of the Mountain" (Kim-un-Kumuy) in Ainu language. Its Ground typing may be inspired by the fact that some bear species, including the Ussuri brown bear, sometimes live in dug out burrows or dens. It may also have traits of Asian black bears, which are known for the moon-like pattern on their chests, thus explaining Ursaluna's cloud-covered full moon pattern on its head. Its humped back is an exaggeration of the humps of fat and muscle some bear species (brown bears have the most prominent humps, but some, like polar bears, also have them, though their humps are smaller) have on their shoulders.

Its categorization, the Peat Pokémon, and Ground type might be due to peat's distribution in Hokkaido, where it is considered a special kind of soil.

Many fans in Japan believe that the design of the Blood Moon form is partially based on Akakabuto from the Silver Fang series based on the physical appearance and the background story to be a sole vagrant. The Blood Moon form might also be based on the yokai Onikuma, which is a kind of long-lived monstrous bear that walks upright, has a ferocious temper, and comes down from mountains to steal livestocks. The aggressiveness of the Blood Moon form is also presumably associated with the negative connection regarding the blood moon phenomenon being a premonition of evil. The blinded left eye of this form is also likely a reference to the eclipse, which is the phenomenon that causes the appearance of the real-life blood moon.

    Etymology

Ursaluna may come from the Latin words ursa (bear) and luna (moon).
