Core series

Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version / Pokémon Platinum Version

Fullmoon Island Cresselia Pt

Cresselia first appears in Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version but has the same role in Pokémon Platinum Version. Once the player has defeated Cynthia in a Pokémon battle, they must go to Canalave City and meet up with Sailor Eldritch. Eldritch has a problem because his son has fallen into a deep slumber while being plagued by several nightmares. The only chance for Eldritch's son to wake up is by obtaining the Lunar Wing on Fullmoon Island, where it is left behind by Cresselia after battle. After this, Cresselia begins to roam Sinnoh.

Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2

In Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2, when the player reaches Lentimas Town, they can go east to Reversal Mountain, and go south to reach the Strange House. A ghost leads the player to the top room, where the Lunar Wing can be found in the center. Once the player defeats Iris, they can go to Marvelous Bridge; near the end of the bridge (if they are coming from Nimbasa City, near the beginning if they are coming from Black City or White Forest) a dialogue box appears on screen, stating that the Lunar Wing has begun to shine. If the player confirms the option to hold up the Lunar Wing, Cresselia's cry is heard, and she appears.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire

On Crescent Isle, the player can activate a mysterious ring to start battling Cresselia.

Anime

Crossover

Super Smash Bros. series

Cresselia is one of the three Legendary Pokémon who can appear in the background of the Spear Pillar stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the other two being Palkia and Dialga. Cresselia attacks using Psycho Cut, in which she uses a lunar "boomerang" that flies around the stage, damaging fighters that it hits.

Cresselia retains her role in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Trivia

Origin

Cresselia could be based on the constellation Cygnus, which represents a swan. As it's associated with light, it is believed that Cresselia has a rivalry with Darkrai which may also reference Cygnus X-1, a celestial object consisting of a black hole that pulls in material from a nearby super giant star and in doing so emits X-rays. Its wings may be based on aurorae, planetary rings, or electron orbits, and it has a crescent moon motif. It may also be based on the Sarimanok, a legendary bird with multicolored wings that is a symbol of good luck originated in Mindanao Region, Philippines. Cresselia could also be based on Diana, Roman Goddess of hunting and moon. Its relation to Cresselia may be based on the term "dark side of the moon", describing a part of the Moon that is unknown or hasn't been explored yet. The feelings between the two Pokémon are also most likely based on a Chinese folktale, "The Cowherd and The Weaver Girl" based on the brightest two stars in the known universe, Altair and Vega. The Cowherder and The Weaver Girl's love was forbidden and were banished on opposite sides of the celestial river of the Milky Way. But once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh month all the magpies in the world fly up and build a bridge between them so the two lovers can be united for a single day of passion.

Etymology

Cresselia comes from crescent (a shape and phase of the Moon), Selene (the goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology), and the suffix -a, which is usually meant to identify something as feminine.
