Wiglett (Japanese: ウミディグダ, Hepburn: Umidiguda) (WIG-let[1]) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.
Biology
Physiology
Wiglett's overall appearance is very similar to Diglett. They are white with two beady black eyes and a large red nose. It is partially submerged in the ground, leaving only its head visible. It pokes up from the earth with a hunched position and can extend its body out of the ground, revealing its body is much longer than it appears.
Behavior
Boasting an exceptional sense of smell, Wiglett is able to pick up scents from over 60 feet away. It has a skittish disposition and is constantly cautious of its surroundings. When it notices the scent of other Pokémon, Wiglett burrows into the sand to conceal itself.[2]
Natural abilities
It may look like Diglett, but it's actually a completely different species of Pokémon. Wiglett pokes a part of its body out of the sand to feed in the ocean. It's still unclear what the rest of its body hidden in the sand is like or how long it might be, it's look-a-like Diglett suffers the same treatment.[2]

- Scarlet
This Pokémon can pick up the scent of a Veluza just over 65 feet away and will hide itself in the sand.
- Violet
Though it looks like Diglett, Wiglett is an entirely different species. The resemblance seems to be a coincidental result of environmental adaptation.

Trivia
- Wiglett was first revealed on September 28, 2022 through a mock-webinar titled "World Pokémon Ecological Society".
- It is the first revealed convergent evolution pokemon.
Origin
Wiglett appears to be based on garden eels, which burrow into the ocean floor and are able to extend and withdraw their bodies from the sand. Its similarity in appearance to the Kantonian Diglett may be based on convergent evolution, which can lead to similar looking species through independent evolution.
Etymology
Wiglett appears to come from "wiggle" and "Diglett", the Pokémon it resembles.
Umidiguda appears to come from umi (sea) and "Digda" (Diglett's Japanese name). The name can be translated to literally mean "sea Diglett".
