Rowlet Concept art

Rowlet is a round bird-like Pokémon with sandy-colored feathers and a darker white underbelly. Like real-life owls, it has a facial disk, an area of brighter white around its eyes. Said eyes are black with white pupils. Its beak is also white on top, but the bottom portion is orange. Underneath, the Pokémon has two short, yet strong orange talons for legs. On its chest, it has a small 'bow' in the form of two leaves, while in back, a single green leaf hangs down to form a sort of tail.

Behavior

Rowlet is a crafty Pokémon that uses the art of stealth to its advantage. Using its delicate wings, it silently draws near its targets and viciously attacks them with sharp feathers and kicks before they even notice it. It's also clever enough to use tactics: if an enemy is far away, it may send its sharp feathers flying rather than getting close. If the foe draws near, it'll switch and attack with kicks instead. At night, it glides through the air on the hunt for prey, while in the day, it sleeps and builds up the energy it'll use for hunting. In battle, it has a tendency to turn its head around to look at its Trainer, showcasing a display of its observational skills.

Evolution

Rowlet evolves into Dartrix upon reaching level 17. Dartrix then evolves into Decidueye at level 34.

    Trivia

    • Rowlet's round body and face resemble the alchemic symbol for Salt, which represents Earth.
    • While its Pokédex entries claim that it attacks foes with vicious kicks, Rowlet is unable to learn any kicking moves in the Pokémon games, including Double Kick.
    • Rowlet and its evolutions are the only Generation VII Pokémon to be available in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
    • Rowlet is one of four first partner Pokémon based on a bird. The other three are Torchic, Piplup, and Quaxly.

    Origin

Rowlet is primarily based on a barn owl. Considering the Alola region's Hawaiian-themed setting, it may also be based on the native pueo owl, where they are known to live in the forests and grasslands of the Hawaiian archipelago. Theme-wise, it may be based on the alchemical symbol for salt, which was associated with the earth; plants are often associated with earth. Rowlet's round, somewhat bisected body somewhat resembles the symbol used for salt (🜔).

    Etymology

Rowlet may come from ruffle and owlet, a baby owl. It may also incorporate round, arrow, or rowan (a type of tree, referring to a Grass type Pokémon).

Mokuroh may be derived from 木 Moku (Japanese for wood) and 梟 Fukurō (Japanese for owl).
