Vileplume

Vileplume (Japanese: ラフレシア, HepburnRafureshia) (VILE-ploom[1]) is a Grass/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Vileplume concept art

Vileplume is purple in color with red eyes and four short limbs. There is also a rafflesia on its head, which is a type of flower known to have a putrid smell.

Gender differences

Female Vileplumes have larger and fewer spots on their petals.

Behavior

The smell of the flowers attracts prey; when they draw close, Vileplume flap their petals, cloaking themselves and their targets in toxic pollen that quickly immobilizes victims. Even as they walk, Vileplume scatter pollen out of their blooms, turning the surrounding air a sickly yellow. This pollen can cause poisoning and paralysis in large amounts, but can also trigger massive allergy attacks in even trace amounts. Like Oddish and Gloom, Vileplume may hide partially buried in the soil, only exposing their flowers for unwary prey to investigate. Because of this, it is inadvisable to approach large flowers in swamps or jungles, as they may actually be Vileplume in disguise waiting for an opportunity to scatter pollen.

Natural abilities

Vileplume are known for their large flower. The flower releases a large amount of pollen in the air when it is flapped. The flapping of the flower can be very loud at times.

Evolution

Vileplume is one of two evolved forms of Gloom, the other being Bellossom. Gloom evolves into a Vileplume with the use of a Leaf Stone.

Jessebelle Vileplume

Vileplume first made its debut in "Holy Matrimony!" under the ownership of Jessebelle.

Trivia

Origin

Vileplume appears to be based on the Rafflesia Arnoldii flower. Its female gender difference may reference the Rafflesia Hasseltii, which has larger white spots than its counterpart.

Etymology

Vileplume comes from the words vile and plume.

Its Japanese name, Rafureshia, is the Japanese translation of rafflesia, the genus of flower it is based on.
