Cryogonal

Cryogonal (Japanese: フリージオ, HepburnFuriijio) (kry-AH-guh-nul[1]) is an Ice-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

Biology

Physiology

Cryogonal is a Pokémon that resembles a living snowflake. Its flat blue body, composed of ice, is hexagonal in shape. It has deep-set eerily glowing blue eyes and an open mouth from which it forms chains of ice crystals.

Behavior

Cryogonal is capable of turning into steam and vanishing when the temperature rises; it returns to its normal icy state when the temperature lowers again.

Cryogonal originated from snow clouds. It is able to capture its victims with icy chain-like formations from its mouth.

Cryogonal is most common during cold weather. It is rumored that both humans and Pokemon who perish on snowy mountains will be reborn as a Cryogonal.

Evolution

Cryogonal does not evolve.

Appearances

Anime

Cryogonal appeared in Caution: Icy Battle Conditions!, as one of Brycen's Pokémon. Multiple Cryogonal are seen when they're with their master: Kyurem in the movie called "Kyurem VS The Sword of Justice", and they also appear in "Team Eevee and the Pokémon Rescue Squad!".

Other appearances

Crossover

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS
Cryogonal SSB3DS

Cryogonal is one of the enemies in Smash Run mode of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. It hovers around the air and attacks by firing Ice Beam either directly ahead or in an arc. If a fighter touches the Ice Beam, they are frozen on contact. Cryogonals take additional damage from fire-based moves, similarly to their appearance in the Pokémon franchise.

Cryogonal also has its own trophy, which is obtained as a random drop in any of the single-player modes.

Trivia

Origin

Cryogonal is based on a snowflake. Cryogonal's ability to transform into water vapor and rise up may be based on the concept of evaporation (one of the stages of the water cycle). The shape of its back and ability to learn light-based moves such as Solar Beam and the move Reflect may also allude to it being based on a mirror.

Etymology

Cryogonal comes from cryo- (a Latin prefix meaning "icy cold") and hexagonal (referring to this Pokémon's shape).

Its Japanese name, Furījio, is a portmanteau of freeze and geometric.
