Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch (Japanese: ふいうち, HepburnSurprise Attack) is a Dark-type move introduced in Generation IV.

Effect

Foe Foe Foe
User Ally Ally

Sucker Punch is a physical move with a +1 priority, meaning that it always goes first unless another Pokémon uses a higher priority move or is faster than the user using the same type of priority. Sucker Punch is not successful if the target is not readying a damage-dealing attack.

In a Double Battle, Sucker Punch can target any adjacent Pokémon.

As of Generation V, Sucker Punch can be executed if Me First is used, despite being a status move.

Sucker Punch's power was slightly weakened from 80 to 70 as of Generation VII.

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, the move's range extends two steps in front of the user.

Trivia

  • Despite its name, Sucker Punch is not a punching move. The term "sucker punch" refers to an unexpected or cheap shot at an opponent, akin to its Japanese name, which translates to "surprise attack". As such, many Pokémon without arms can learn Sucker Punch, and its base power is not increased by the Iron Fist ability.
