Golduck

Golduck (Japanese: ゴルダック, HepburnGorudakku) (GOL-duck[1]) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Golduck is a blue-colored duck Pokémon. Its hands and feet are now webbed, which result in Golduck's superior swimming skills. Golduck has red eyes and a red gem on its head. Its head has four spikes on top. It has a long tail and its hands and feet have three long claws.

Special abilities

Golduck can use psychic powers. When they are used, the gem on its head will glow, which nearly drove it to extinction. It is also a strong swimmer. The manga shows that via Telepathy, it can give its Trainer and allies knowledge.

Behavior

Using their webbed limbs, they can easily outspeed even the fastest human swimmers, and as such can make quick work of agile fish; they may even use their psychic abilities to disorient and disable their prey before catching them. Surprisingly, Golduck rely heavily on their tails for swimming strength, stamina and maneuverability in addition to their limbs. Golduck can swim for two days straight without rest. They can often be seen gliding agilely through the water at dusk in slower rivers (though they have no trouble with currents).

Golduck is most likely a fish eater, but eats its food on land as opposed to in the water.

Most scientists in the world of Pokémon believe that Golduck, with their duck-like appearances and crepuscular natures, are the inspiration behind the mythical kappa, a common myth in regions like Kanto and Johto; in these regions, they were thought to punish those who polluted their rivers by pulling them beneath the waters.

Evolution

Golduck evolves from Psyduck at level 33.

Appearances

Onia Golduck

Anime

In "Bye Bye Psyduck", Misty saw a Golduck which she thought her Psyduck evolved into, but it was later revealed to be a wild Golduck that had similar behaviors to Brock. In "The Perfect Match", Trinity used a Golduck to battle Misty in the Whirl Cup.

Manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blue owns a Golduck and uses it to Surf and battle.

Trivia

  • Despite its name, Golduck is blue instead of gold.
    • It is rumoured that Psyduck and Golduck had their names mixed up, due to the fact that Psyduck has a golden texture and Golduck looks more like a Psychic-type Pokémon.
  • Despite possessing Telekinesis and Psychic powers, Golduck is not part Psychic-type.
  • Despite being able to use Psychic powers, Golduck and its pre-evolution, Psyduck, could not learn Psychic until Generation IV.
  • Golduck and its pre-evolution Psyduck are the only Pokémon to have Cloud Nine as an ability and not have it as their Hidden Ability.

Origin

Golduck is likely based on a duck, platypus, and a kappa. It is also possible that Golduck is based on the bunyip, an aquatic monster of Australian aboriginal mythology, sometimes depicted with webbed feet and a duck's bill.

Etymology

Golduck is derived from gold (gold is often associated with psychic properties) and duck.
