Empoleon

Empoleon (Japanese: エンペルト, HepburnEnperuto) (em-PO-lee-on[1]) is the Water/Steel-type First partner Pokémon of the Sinnoh region, evolved from Prinplup and Piplup. Introduced in Generation IV.

Biology

Physiology

Empoleon appears to be a stout, navy blue penguin-like Pokémon with orange webbed feet like ducks have. It also appears to have metal flippers with blue metal bordering it and three orange small claws underneath its flippers. It has a blue fin at the back along with a tail and a giant metal blue fin resembling a necktie in the center of it starting from its chin. Empoleon also appears to have something looking like a tuxedo that it is wearing. It also mainly has a black body with a some white in the center of it along with black spots at the bottom of its white part of body. It also has two giant golden spots on the back of it along with a three horned trident crest making its beak.

Behavior

Like its pre-evolutions, it is a Pokémon with a strong self-esteem, but it is more aggressive. If offended, it will attack the offender with the blades on its wings. Trainers who have raised them from Piplup will have finally earned their respect and loyalty. Traded or wild-caught Empoleon, on the other hand, are notoriously difficult to train due to their pride. Empoleon live in small groups. While each member retains its own individuality and sense of self-worth, they have learned that teamwork in hunting yields far superior results when compared to solitary attempts. The Empoleon with the largest horns on their heads are the leaders of the groups. They are too proud to involve themselves in petty disputes, rather they appear aloof in most conflicts; however, they will viciously attack anyone that hurts their pride with devastating slashes with their wings. Though known for the hard work it takes to train one, their strength and willpower have made Empoleon mainstays for Sinnohan trainers able to handle the challenge.

In ancient times, the people of Hisui once revered Empoleon to be the Master of the Waves.

Natural abilities

Although Empoleon is a Water/Steel-type Pokémon, it can learn a variety of Water, Ice, Steel and Flying-Type attacks. It can also learn many moves involving claws, such as Metal Claw and Shadow Claw. It can learn Hydro Pump, a very powerful Water-type move.

Empoleon is able to swim faster than a jet boat. By using its razor-sharp wings, Empoleon can easily slice through a large ice floe.

Evolution

Empoleon is the evolved form of Prinplup, as of level 36. Empoleon is also the final form of Piplup's evolutionary line.

Trivia

  • Empoleon is the only Water-type, fully evolved First partner Pokémon that is not fully resistant to Fire-type moves, due to it being Steel-type as a secondary type.
  • No other Pokémon has the same Water/Steel type combination as Empoleon.
  • Empoleon, being a Steel-type as well as Water-type, is one of the Water-type Pokémon that aren't weak to Grass-type attacks.
  • It is the only fully evolved First partner Pokémon in the Sinnoh region not to have any Starter type weaknesses.
  • Empoleon and its evolutionary relatives are the only starter Pokémon to have their abilities changed, changing from Defiant to Competitive in Generation IX.

Origin

Empoleon is based on emperor penguins, more so than its pre-evolutions are as Empoleon has a darker color and webbed feet. The trident marking on its head is likely a reference to Poseidon/Neptune, the Greek/Roman god of the ocean, who used and was often symbolized by this weapon. It also appears to be based on kings and royalty.

Etymology

Empoleon comes from emperor, polar, and Napoleon (an emperor of France).

Enperuto comes from emperor, Bonaparte (Napoleon's surname), and possibly expert. The ruto in its name may also allude to the Naruto Strait, famous for its whirlpools, which gave its name to a traditional Japanese fishcake (penguins eat fish) with a spiral pattern on them.
