Paras

Paras (Japanese: パラス, HepburnParasu) (PAR-iss[1]) is a Bug/Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Paras concept art

Paras resembles a cross between a cicada nymph and a crab. It has an orange shell-like exterior. Its two front limbs are very large, allowing Paras to grip on to prey and its environment. The most distinct feature are the two mushrooms on its back. It also has very large eyes on the top of its head.

Behavior

Paras are covered in fungal spores upon birth, specifically that of a variety known as tochukaso. As a Paras grows, so do the mushrooms on its back, which are not present at birth and do not emerge until later in development. Paras feed by burrowing and sucking nutrients out of tree roots; in turn, the mushrooms drain nutrients out of their host Paras's bodies. Paras must feed ravenously as a result. Recent discoveries have shown that the mushrooms also control part of their hosts’ brains, and in fact are the ones that signal for Paras to burrow for roots. Paras can be found in damp, dark areas where fungi thrive; sunlight and dryness can damage their bodies.

Special abilities

Paras can have the ability Effect Spore or Dry Skin.

Effect Spore makes the foe paralyzed, asleep or poisoned 30% of the time whenever the foe hits Paras with a physical move. Dry Skin causes Paras to recover HP when it is raining and lose HP when it is sunny. The mushrooms on Paras' back have a mutualism with each other. The mushrooms get energy from Paras, while Paras gets to create spores.

Evolution

Paras evolves into Parasect once it reaches level 24.

Goh Paras

Paras is featured in "The Problem with Paras" under the ownership of Cassandra. It was initially extremely weak and cowardly but Cassandra needed it to evolve into a Parasect so she can use the giant mushroom to aid in her medical research. It does so towards the end of the episode.

Goh owns a Paras that was caught in PJ006: Working My Way Back to Mew!.

Trivia

Origin

Paras appears to be based on a cicada nymph with some aspects of a crab. Its mushrooms seem to be based on Cordyceps fungi, which parasitize and mind-control several species of insects in order to propagate.

Etymology

Paras is a shortening of the word parasite.
