Naganadel

Naganadel (Japanese: アーゴヨン, HepburnAagoyon) (NAW-guh-NAW-duhl[1]), codenamed UB Stinger (Japanese: UB: Stinger), is a Poison/Dragon-type Pokémon from Generation VII. It is an Ultra Beast, one of the several species of Pokémon native to Ultra Space. It is exclusive to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Biology

Physiology

Naganadel is a large purple striped Pokémon that has both draconic and insectoid wasp-like features. The top half of its body is slender with thin arms and fuchsia tipped claws. Both shoulders have gray spikes. Naganadel possess purple draconic wings, which it uses to fly. These wings have a single fuchsia claw at the joint and darker purple membranes. At the end of its long neck is its head, which has a large spiked crest and gray face spikes which act as mandibles when it opens its mouth. Its glowing cyan eyes are conjoined, giving the appearance of a visor. The lower half of its body is a large abdomen that resembles a wasp's abdomen. There are three gray spikes on the end of the abdomen, with the middle one being the largest and resembling a hypodermic needle or a wasp's stinger.

Behavior

Said to dwell in hive-like structures on their home world, these creatures appear to be fiercely protective of their pre-evolutions, Naganadel can shoot glowing, corrosive poison from their primary stinger up to a distance of six miles (9.7 kilometers) away. This poison is also incredibly sticky, serving to both trap and incapacitate victims. According to URS research, Naganadel's brain is in fact housed in its abdomen, and its three stingers are directly connected to the organ; their research proposes that the stingers may also serve as sensory organs of sorts. Directly touching these stingers, however, causes the creatures to react violently, likely due to a natural reaction from nerve pain. Naganadel are believed to be able to share thoughts and images telepathically with other sentient beings, though this has not yet been confirmed by non-URS researchers.

Unlike any other Ultra Beasts, Naganadel act as normal wild Pokémon (along with its pre-evolution). They act and appear similarly to pseudo-legendaries, and possess the intelligence and benevolence of Pokémon in the normal world. They also evolve, connect with their trainers at an emotional level, and genuinely protect their young and their trainers, not attacking anyone or anything violently for destructive or malevolent reasons. They have very sensitive nerves in their stingers, and only act violently out of pain and/or discomfort if their stingers are touched, like any wild animal.

Natural abilities

Naganadel's main stinger can eject a powerful, adhesive, and luminescent poison at a distance of over six miles. The abdomen contains hundreds of liters of this poison, as well as the Ultra Beasts' brain. The stingers on their abdomens are directly connected to their brains, and they will react with violence if they are touched by anyone.[1]

Evolution

Naganadel evolves from Poipole after learning Dragon Pulse.

Ash Naganadel

Ash's Poipole evolve into a Naganadel and return to Ash to help him battle against the Guzzlord at the Manalo Conference in "Z-Move Showdown!"

In the anime, Naganadel appears as a leader of the pack of Poipole, also one of them who lives in its homeland.

Trivia

  • Naganadel is the first known Ultra Beast to have an evolutionary line.
  • Naganadel shares its species with Nidoran, both being the Poison Pin Pokémon.
  • A mistake was made in the trailer for Naganadel where it was shown being sent out in a Beast Ball. This is impossible as its pre-evolution, Poipole, is only obtainable in a normal Poké Ball. However, in the Crown Tundra, it is obtained in a Beast Ball.
  • Naganadel and Dragalge share some similarities:

Origin

Naganadel is based on a European dragon and a wasp. It resembles insects such wasps, hornets, and bees, with some vague mantis traits, while its stinger resembles a hypodermic needle. Its shiny form resembles a yellow jacket wasp.

Etymology

Naganadel comes from Nāga (an ancient snake/cobra that spit dangerous venom, as well as an Indonesian/Malaysian name for dragon) and Nadel (German for needle).

Its Japanese name, Agoyon, is a mix of 顎 ago (jaw), ago (Italian for needle), agony (pain), dragon, yon (four, as four is considered unlucky in Japanese culture due to the fact that it can be read as "shi," meaning "death") and 용 yong (Korean for dragon).
