Stunfisk

Stunfisk (Japanese: マッギョ, HepburnMaggyo) (STUN-fisk[1]) is a Ground/Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V. It has a Ground/steel-type Galarian Form introduced in Generation VIII.

Biology

Physiology

Unovan

Stunfisk is a flat fish-like Pokémon. Its body is mostly a muddy brown color, which allows it to camouflage as it hides beneath the water. It has two short brown fins on either side of its flat body, and a bright yellow tail fin. Two yellow markings run down its back. It has round eyes with black pupils, and pale brown lips. A yellow exclamation marking runs from its tail to the center of its body.

Galarian

Its Galarian form is gray with green markings resembling grass. Its tail and the front section of its body resembles a bear trap's sharp teeth. Its fins are more square-shaped and have visible digits. Its jaw now has teeth and resembles a Poké Ball.

Behavior

Unovan

Despite looking seemingly sluggish, Stunfisk are cunning predators. They hunt by burying themselves in sand, then zapping anyone who steps on it, while smiling sadistically. If they can't paralyze the target, they will flee by contorting their bodies to flop away.

Galarian

In Galar, Stunfisk hunt instead by camouflaging into the dirt and lure the unwary with their Poké Ball-shaped mouth, similar to Foongus. These Pokémon can be found in marshes and wetlands like their standard counterparts, but have also moved into mines damp with metallic pit water. Rather than electricity, Galarian Stunfisk instead wield sharp iron 'teeth' that they use to chomp down on unwary passerby. The bodies of Galarian Stunfisk are also as sturdy as steel, so they do not mind being stepped on. Their lips are gaudily colored like Poké Balls, though scientists speculate they may instead look like appetizing Berries or mushroom caps to other Pokémon. When victims come by to investigate, they swing their tails forward to meet their heads, clamping down the jagged barbs that line their fins like interlocking teeth. This mechanism is so efficient at holding down prey that Galarian trappers once based hunting equipment off of these Pokémon.

Natural Abilities

Stunfisk have very thick skin that even sumo wrestlers can't harm.

Evolution

Stunfisk does not evolve.

Pokédex entries

  • Black

Its skin is very hard, so it is unhurt even if stepped on by sumo wrestlers. It smiles when transmitting electricity.

  • White

It conceals itself in the mud of the seashore. Then it waits. When prey touch it, it delivers a jolt of energy.

  • Black 2

When its opponent can't be paralyzed, it contorts itself with unexpected speed and flops away.

  • White 2

When its opponent can't be paralyzed, it contorts itself with unexpected speed and flops away.

  • X

Its skin is very hard, so it is unhurt even if stepped on by sumo wrestlers. It smiles when transmitting electricity.

  • Y

It conceals itself in the mud of the seashore. Then it waits. When prey touch it, it delivers a jolt of electricity.

  • Omega Ruby

Its skin is very hard, so it is unhurt even if stepped on by sumo wrestlers. It smiles when transmitting electricity.

  • Alpha Sapphire

It conceals itself in the mud of the seashore. Then it waits. When prey touch it, it delivers a jolt of electricity.

  • Sword

Unovan Form: Thanks to bacteria that lived in the mud flats with it, this Pokémon developed the organs it uses to generate electricity.
Galarian Form: Living in mud with a high iron content has given it a strong steel body.

  • Shield

Unovan Form: For some reason, this Pokémon smiles slightly when it emits a strong electric current from the yellow markings on its body.
Galarian Form: Its conspicuous lips lure prey in as it lies in wait in the mud. When prey gets close, Stunfisk clamps its jagged steel fins down on them.

Appearances

  • In the anime:
    • Cilan caught a Stunfisk.
    • Goh caught a Galarian Stunfisk.

Trivia

  • Stunfisk is the first, and currently only, Pokémon that has a Ground/Electric-type combination.
  • Despite living in water and being based on a fish, Stunfisk is not a Water type.
    • However, it was planned to be Water type, but was changed to the Ground/Electric type due to type balancing.
    • Paradoxically, although Stunfisk live in water, it is vulnerable to Water-type moves.
  • Both of Stunfisk's Abilities, Static and Limber, are related to the paralysis status condition. The latter ability is rather useless due to Stunfisk being immune to electric moves due to its original typing, unless it was changed.
  • A doctor in Humilau City tells that sleeping on a Stunfisk relaxes the body with its electricity.
  • Stunfisk is the flattest among the recent Pokémon. This was because its designer originally wanted it to be the flattest Pokémon in existence.
  • Stunfisk's Galarian form's offensive and defensive stats are reversed from its regular form.
  • Stunfisk is the only regional variant to lack an evolutionary line.
  • If Stunfisk holds an Air Balloon, it becomes immune to both of its own types.
  • Shiny Galarian Stunfisk resembles its Unovan variant.
  • Galarian Stunfisk is the only Pokémon able to use Snap Trap so far.

Origin

Stunfisk is based on a flounder and a stargazer. It might also be based on a goosefish.

Its Galarian Form resembles a foothold traps such as a bear trap, which serves a similar purpose to its original origin of hiding in deep places and snatching up whoever steps on it. It may be based on the original concept of old bear traps, originally meaning to stun whoever stepped inside instead of clamping down. In modern times, The type of Bear traps that has been outlawed are the ones with teeth.

Its mouth resembles a Poké Ball, acting as the design of an overworld item, bait, and possibly playing off of the mimic-type enemy archetype in video games, which is also shares with Pokémon such as Voltorb and Foongus.

Etymology

Stunfisk comes from stun and fisk (Danish for "fish").
