Koffing (Japanese: ドガース, HepburnDogaasu) (CAWF-ing[1]) is a Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Biology

Physiology

Koffing concept artwork

Koffing is a Poison Gas Pokémon. Its body is purple and spherical with a skull and crossbones on the lower parts of its body. It has openings that allow gases to escape. A Koffing will spew a harmless gas if its happy, and a poisonous gas if it's angry. Koffing mainly eats rotten kitchen garbage.

Natural abilities

Lighter-than-air gases in its body keep it aloft. The gases not only smell, but they are also explosive. Koffing's signature attack is Poison Gas.

Evolution

Koffing evolves into Weezing at Level 35.

Sprites

    Anime

    James Koffing

Koffing first appeared in the anime in Pokemon Emergency as James' Pokémon. It was extremely loyal to him, so much that it evolved into Weezing in Dig Those Diglett.

A group of wild Koffing appeared in A Poached Ego, where they were captured by a poacher along with a group of Ekans. They were rescued by Team Rocket, who were forced to release Jessie's Arbok and James' Weezing in the wild with them.

    Crossover appearances

    Super Smash Bros. series

    Super Smash Bros.

    Koffing SSB64 sprite

In Super Smash Bros., Koffing is a Poké Ball Pokémon that, if summoned, uses Poison Gas, continuously damaging any opponents within range. An opponent can also be damaged from touching a Koffing.

    Super Smash Bros. Melee

Koffing does not return in Super Smash Bros. Melee, in favor of Weezing being a Poké Ball Pokémon instead, but it is mentioned in the description of the Weezing trophy.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

    Koffing SSB4 3DS

Koffings are enemies in the Smash Run mode of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Here, after Koffing inflates itself for a while, it releases Poison Gas, which damages the player's fighter while lowering stats. If the Koffing is defeated, the stats are automatically restored without having to be collected.

There is a collectible trophy of Koffing, like with the other enemies in Smash Run mode. It is obtained as a random drop in one of the single-player modes.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Koffing is an item in Smash Tour mode. When used, Koffing uses Smokescreen to hide the board with a thick cloud of purple smoke for one turn.

A different trophy of Koffing appears, although Koffing is depicted with the same pose as in its trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. The Koffing trophy now has a specific unlock criteria of having to complete the true Solo All-Star mode within six minutes as Jigglypuff.

    Trivia

    • Despite Koffing's diet of rotten kitchen garbage, it is unable to learn Gunk Shot, which the description of the move says that the user shoots filthy garbage at the foe.
    • Koffing is one of three Pokemon based on forms of environmental pollution, with the other two being Grimer and Trubbish (and their evolutions).
    • Koffing is the mascot of Smogon, an internet resource handling and analyzing competitive Pokemon battling. Smogo is Koffing's German name.
      • Koffing also lends its Japanese name to Dogasu’s Backpack, a fan site for the anime. Dogasu is Koffing's Japanese name.
    • Koffing's Japanese name (DOGARS) is sung in the background of Roxie's Gym in the Japanese version of Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2, while in the international versions "Pokémon" is sung instead.
    • In Pokémon Red and Blue, Koffing's skull and crossbones on its body appear above its face, rather than below its face as it currently does.
    • Koffing and Weezing from Pokémon were originally named Ny and La, referencing the polluted cities of New York & Los Angeles.
    • Koffing is one of the 16 Pokemon to be made into a puppet in Japan.
    • In Super Smash Bros., Koffing is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Smog.
    • The Ben 10 Omniverse transformation Gutrot is inspired by Koffing, as the former’s head resembles the latter’s body, and both have the ability to mix chemicals together to make gases.
      • Ultimate Gravattack from the same show has 3 levitating planetoids that resemble Koffing.

    Origin

Koffing resembles a cloud, naval mine, or smoke bomb. It is mostly a physical representation of air pollution.

    Etymology

Koffing is a misspelling of the word "coughing."

Dogāsu is a portmanteau of 毒 (doku, poison) and "gas."
