Fletchinder

Fletchinder (Japanese: ヒノヤコマ, HepburnHinoyakoma) (FLETCH-in-der[1]) is a Fire/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

Biology

Physiology

Fletchinder is a sparrow-like bird Pokémon. The feathers covering the top part of its body are a vivid fire-red hue, while its underside is gray. Its wings are black with feathery yellow tips. It has a black white-striped tail, and black legs and talons. Its eyes are black with yellow patterns on either side, and it has a sharply pointed black beak.

Behavior

Fletchinder are extremely aggressive and territorial birds that always fight amongst themselves over ownership of feeding grounds. Their main diet is bug Pokémon, which they hunt by scattering embers through the tall grass to lure out and gobble up. Some of the more intrepid Fletchinder prefer launching themselves at dens, before killing their frightened prey with thier talons.

Natural abilities

Fletchinder rely on their bellies' flame sacs to generate flight velocity. The hotter their bellies, the faster they can fly, though such a process requires some time for a Fletchinder to achieve. Regardless, they are prided to be one of the fastest candidates among the known bird Pokémon.

Fletchinder also have rather strong talons, which are capable of slashing their panicking prey. They also can breathe embers from their beaks for hunting prey.

Evolution

Fletchinder evolves from Fletchling starting at level 17, and evolves into Talonflame starting at level 35.

Ash Fletchinder

Ash's Fletchling evolved into Fletchinder during a Sky Battle in the episode "Battles in the Sky!" It was later shown in battle with Korrina's Lucario where Lucario managed to defeat it.

Trivia

  • Fletchinder is one of 4 dual-type Pokémon whose primary type is different from its pre-evolved form. The others are Steelix, Azurill, and Altaria.
  • With 11 letters in its name, Fletchinder is the first Pokémon that took advantage of the increased character limit in Pokémon X & Y.

Origin

Fletchinder is based on a robin. However, its hunting method of flushing out prey by setting fire to grass is very similar to real-life birds like black kites. Often known as 'firehawks,' black kites sometimes hunt by carrying burning sticks and deliberately setting wildfires. If the prey doesn't get burned alive, the birds will often chase them out of the foliage, much like Fletchinder does.

Etymology

Fletchinder comes from fletch (a material in archery) and cinder or tinder.
