Garchomp

Garchomp (Japanese: ガブリアス, HepburnGaburiasu) (gar-CHOMP[1]) is a Dragon/Ground-type Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology

Physiology

Garchomp is a bipedal draconic shark-like Pokémon, colored mostly dark purplish-blue. It has red underbelly, extending from its mouth to its belly, which ends in a yellow triangle-like shape. On its head it possesses two horn-like appendages, also resembling a hammerhead shark, with dark gray and yellow eyes under them, as well as a star-like yellow mark on its snout. Its arms have one claw each, and triangular fins emerge from behind these claws, as well as one on its back, which has a notch out of it, if male. It also has two on its tail tip, one on top and one on the bottom. It has two white spikes on its arms and legs, and it has four teeth on top if its mouth, and six on the bottom, the tops ones overlap when its mouth is closed. It has three lines across its neck, (which are not a different color than the main body) which somewhat resemble gills, however they are also found around its legs and tail, as well as two on the ‘horns.’ It likely takes inspiration from the Carcharodontosaurus as well, with its name meaning ‘shark-toothed lizard.’

Upon Mega Evolution, both of its claws are replaced with red scythes covering its arms, and its chin becomes bulkier. Two sets of 5 spikes pertrude from its chest, and 2 red spikes emerge from its knees.

Gender differences

Male Garchomp have a notch on their dorsal fin.

Behavior

Garchomp are relentless pursuit predators that chase down their prey while never allowing them to escape. Being carnivores, If they ever irrupt into a flock of bird Pokémon, they will not hesitate to swallow the entire flock. They always have violent disputes with Salamence, their natural rival, when hunting for food. They are loyal and friendly towards their trainers though, as demonstrated by Prof. Sycamore's Garchomp in the anime.

They are rarely seen in the wild as they live in caves.

Upon Mega Evolving, Garchomp will become uncontrollably savage and aggressive due to their prided wings have become scythes. They won't cease throwing into a fit of ferocious rage and will even slice their enemies into scraps.

Natural Abilities

Garchomp can fly in high velocity of sound in the air when folding their bodies and stretching their wings, which can crash trees when they are running at a high speed.

The appendages on their heads can serve the purpose of a sensor, which are helpful for detecting faraway preys.

Evolution

Garchomp is the final evolution of Gible. Gabite evolves into this Pokémon at level 48. Garchomp can further evolve into Mega Garchomp by using its Garchompite.

Anime

Cynthia's Garchomp made her anime debut in "Top- Down Training!" where she battled Paul. Garchomp is Cynthia's main Pokémon and she releases her to assist Ash and the group to disband Team Galactic. In the Best Wishes series, she released her again to aid Iris' Dragonite, Ridley's Golurk and Cilan's Pansage to fight against Thundurus, Tornadus and Landorus in both their original and Therian forms while trying to thwart Team Rocket's Operation Tempest which proves successful when Ash's Pikachu destroys the platform that everyone is standing using its amplified Electro Ball. In Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Garchomp is mostly used by Cynthia when Ash and his group are in trouble throughout the anime series' run. She also used it again in her battle against Iris and later Ash during the semifinals at the Masters 8 Tournament and the second Pokémon to use Mega Evolution like Professor Sycamore's Garchomp.

Another Garchomp appeared in Pokémon Summer Academy. Professor Sycamore's Garchomp appeared in "Lumiose City Pursuit!" when Team Rocket made it out of control. She is Professor Sycamore's main Pokémon and serves as his research experiment at his lab. Later when James and Professor Sycamore fight for the Key Stone to make Garchomp mega evolves into a Mega Garchomp after they capture her along with her Mega Stone. Garchomp still chooses Professor Sycamore as her Trainer in her mega form and he uses this to blast Team Rocket away with its powerful abilities.

Trivia

  • This Pokémon has the same star shape on its forehead as Sharpedo.
    • Coincidentally, the two Pokémon are based on sharks.
  • Garchomp and its evolutionary relatives are the only Dragon-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV that are not Legendary Pokémon.
  • Garchomp is the only Pseudo-Legendary Pokémon with a gender difference.
  • Despite multiple instances stating and showing Garchomp is capable of flight, it cannot learn the move Fly. It can still learn Aerial Ace, a Flying-type move, however.
  • From a competitive point of view, Mega Garchomp's Mega Evolution is weaker than its regular form as its Speed stat drops from 102 to 92, Rough Skin is replaced by Sand Force which is more situational and it loses the benefit of holding an item as Mega Stones have no other effect after a Pokémon Mega Evolves.
  • Despite not being present in Pokémon Sword and Shield's base game until the release of their DLC pass, The Crown Tundra, Mach Motors, a car company that offers Poké Jobs, is likely based on it, with their name referencing Garchomp's category and their logo resembling a Garchomp's head seen from above.
  • Garchomp ranked 7th, among all Pokémon, in the Pokémon of the Year 2020 poll by The Pokémon Company. It also ranked 2nd among all Sinnoh Pokémon.

Origin

Garchomp is possibly based on the wyvern, Velociraptor and a land shark, the latter being a fictional creature often found in popular culture. It also has some elements of fighter jets in its design.

Mega Garchomp takes some inspiration from stereotypical bikers (the "teeth" lining the red part of its stomach and chest, combined with its dark body color, may be interpreted as a leather jacket, with the "teeth" being a zipper) and possibly praying mantises.

Etymology

Garchomp comes from "gar" (a carnivorous fish) gabugabu (to gobble), gaburito (to chew), "gargantuan" and "chomp".

Gaburiasu comes from gabugabu (to gobble), gaburito (to chew), アース (āsu, earth), and "Carcharias" (a genus of sand tiger sharks and the species name for the great white shark).
