Kantonian

Team Rocket Meowth concept art

Meowth is a small, bipedal, feline Pokémon. It has two cream whiskers on each side of its oval-shaped face and two hairs sticking up on either side of the golden coin-like gem on its forehead. Meowth also has a curled tail. Meowth's tail and feet are cream-colored like the rest of it, but they are brown at the end. It has small paw pads on the undersides of its heels and toes. It is much like a Maneki Neko, a toy of Japanese descent known for bobbing its arm and hand up and down.

Alolan

Alolan Meowth concept art

Alolan Meowth is a light blue-gray with smaller, half-open eyes. It was bred by royalty in the past. They are very spoiled, selfish and arrogant, which makes them popular.

Galarian

Galarian Meowth is a grayish-brown color with thicker fur and a grinning mouth with sharp teeth. It travelled with Vikings in ancient times, which caused its fur to harden into iron. It battles by extending its claws like daggers.

Gigantamax

Gigantamax Meowth is a distorted version of its original form. Its body becomes extremely long, its eyes turn yellow without pupils and its coin gains a kanji for big on it.

Behavior

Meowth usually preys on other weaker Pokémon, showing that it is carnivorous. However, it sometimes takes in fruits, so it is more accurate to call it an omnivore.

Kantonian

Meowth is largely nocturnal and often prowls the streets looking for loose change, as it is attracted to bright shiny objects for some unexplained reason. It always cleans its face to prevent its forehead coin from getting dirtied. It is common to witness Meowth ferociously disputing with Murkrow, which is also known for being equally obsessed with glowing things. Although it can be easily drawn by coins and may befriend people that offers them, its fickleness cannot guarantee such friendships will last; when it is feeling good, it will be willing to share a look of its hoarded treasures to its Trainer.

Meowth are common Pokémon roaming and dwelling in cities and towns. Some reside at forests or near beaches. Most are ubiquitous in Kanto and Johto, but uncommon in Sinnoh.

Alolan

Alolan Meowth is extremely cunning, capricious and proud, and will become very aggressive when someone dirties its coin or hurts its self-esteem. It is also extremely picky about food due to its kind having dwelt with royalties for centuries. Nonetheless, it is popular among Trainers who prefer giving more attention to others than themselves. It usually repeatedly targets its foes' blind spots during battles.

Alolan Meowth were not originated from Alola but instead being an imported species for the royalties. The collapse of dynasties have caused them to become more and more commonplace around Alola.

Galarian

Its Galarian Form is a warrior, often showing off the dark coin on its head to others. The darker and harder its coin, the more respect it can earn from its kind. It doesn't get along with its Kantonian variant. These Meowth spent much of their lives aboard ships, helping their trainers plunder defenseless villages near beaches and rivers. When these raiders returned to their northern homes, they shared some of their stolen riches with their Pokémon.

Natural abilities

Meowth are known for their razor sharp claws that can ruthlessly scratch their foes and inflict numerous scars. They can effortlessly retract said claws to stealthily sneak away.

In the anime, Team Rocket's Meowth is capable of human speech (a skill he learned while living on the street of Hollywood to impress a female Meowth named Meowzie).

Evolution

Meowth evolves into Persian at level 28.

Alolan Meowth evolves into Alola Persian with max happiness.

Galarian Meowth evolves into Perrserker at level 28.

Trivia

Konya sprite
  • It's never explained why Meowth doesn't have a nose.
    • This is also shown in the anime to where Meowth from Team Rocket often breaks the fourth wall and states that "The artists didn't draw him with a nose".
  • Meowth is one of the 16 Pokémon to be made into a puppet in Japan.
  • It was implied that Galarian and normal Meowth don't get along well.
  • Alolan Meowth having Rattled is rather redundant as it resists 2 of the 3 types affected by it, and the last type bug is super effective against it and Rattled does not stop this.
  • In Super Smash Bros., Meowth is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Pay Day.
  • In Sun & Moon and Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, Alolan Meowth evolves with friendship. However, in Let's Go, Pikachu! & Let's Go, Eevee!, it instead evolves at Level 28. This may be due to the fact that Friendship was not a factor in Generation I.
  • Meowth has the most form changes of all Generation I Pokémon, having three regional-based forms (Normal, Alolan and Galar), three of two evolved regional forms (two Persian (one being Alolan) and a Galar Form-exclusive Perrserker), and a Gigantamax for a Kantonian Form.
    • It is also overall the first Pokémon to have more than one regional variant.
    • Coincidentally, all of its regional variants have a type immunity. Kantonian Meowth is immune to Ghost-type moves, Alolan Meowth is immune to Psychic-type moves, and Galarian Meowth is immune to Poison-type moves.
  • As of Pokémon Sword and Shield, Meowth is the third Pokémon to be voiced by an anime seiyū, and one of the two Pokémon to have their original anime seiyū reprising their role.
    • However, unlike Pikachu or Eevee, Meowth isn't a Starter Pokémon, and its anime seiyū's voice can only be heard while in Gigantamax form.
  • Meowth was originally going to have a pre-evolution called "Kōnya", which would evolve into Meowth at level 14, that was planned for Generation I and Generation II. Nevertheless, Kōnya ended up getting scrapped from both generations.

Origin

Meowth is based on the Maneki-neko, a Japanese yōkai that supposedly gave great luck by raising its paw. They are often used as charms in the form of toys or statues that are said to bring good luck or wealth to businesses if placed at the entrance of a room or establishment. This is evident by Meowth's move Pay Day, which increases the amount of money earned after a battle. Meowth also sports a Koban, an ancient Japanese gold coin that is often seen held by Maneki-neko statues. Junichi Masuda has also stated that Meowth was partially based on Satoshi Tajiri's pet cat.

Its Alolan Form is based off the British Blue, a British shorthair with blue-gray fur.

Its Galarian form may be based on a Norwegian Forest cat with elements of a stereotypical Viking. Its Shiny coloration resembles its counterpart from Kanto.

Its Gigantamax form may act as a reference to the long-cat meme, or the giant mutant cat from the 1970 British comedy "Monty Python's Flying Circus" which was created to stop killer cars but eventually went rogue on its own, or Street Fighter 3's Necro.

Etymology

Meowth comes from "meow" and "wealth".

Its Japanese name Nyaasu comes from "nya", the Japanese onomatopoeia for "meow".
