Qwilfish

Qwilfish (Japanese: ハリーセン, HepburnHarīsen) (KWILL-fish[1]) is a Water/Poison-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It has a Dark/Poison-type Hisuian form introduced in Generation VIII.

Biology

Physiology

Johtonian

Qwilfish resembles a pufferfish. It has a teal-green top and a pale green underside. Noticeable features of Qwilfish are its toxic spikes, its paddle-like tail, and its round shape. Its eyes are straight and serious.

Hisuian

Qwilfish has similar look to its Johto counterpart due to its diet. The lower half is colored light yellow while The upper half is black with black spikes that has dark purple tips. The front spikes on their forehead are smaller. There are crescent purple lines underneath Qwilfish's eyes and its lips are colored purple. It now has a large, flat tail with a black outline and a purple inside, which also has a pattern that resembles the letter "q."

Behavior

Johtonian

To defend themselves, Qwilfish quickly swallow large amounts of water (2.6 gallons/approx. 10 litres on average) and inflate themselves to up to twice their original sizes, hoping to match their foes in stature. In this state, they can launch the spikes off of their bodies to spear and inject enemies with their toxins. While inflated, however, Qwilfish experience much trouble swimming; though they are already not very good swimmers when deflated, they often will fail to move at all when fully inflated, simply floating along in the ocean currents until they expel all of their water.

Qwilfish are territorial and will engage in inflation contests to see who can grow the largest. Generally, individuals float away in currents before winners can be determined. They usually swim in the open ocean, far away from the shore.

Hisuian

In the cold waters of Hisui (and by extension Sinnoh), resources were scarcer than in more temperate regions. Scientists believe that the region's harsher climate forced Hisuian Qwilfish to become more aggressive than their relatives in order to survive. Rather than inflating themselves for protection, they instead spray venom from the tips of their barbs, jetting it through the water in streams. In addition to being noxious, this venom numbs upon contact and can even paralyze nerves if left untreated. Hisuian Qwilfish are short-tempered and will consider any foreign entity that approach them to be a threat. Sinnohan fishermen historically were at odds with these Pokémon; there are many recorded accounts of fishing boats returning from the sea with full hauls, only to have them spoiled by a Hisuian Qwilfish spraying venom all over the catches. Nets were also commonly torn to shreds by their spiky exteriors. Their relationships with these fishermen weren't strictly detrimental, however. Hisuian Qwilfish venom, after being diluted with seawater, was also used as an anesthetic for emergency medical treatments on ships.

Natural abilities

By inflating themselves, Qwilfish can eject their spikes to poison their victims.

Hisuian Qwilfish can can use their barbs to shoot venom on their prey, leaving their victims' nerves numbed and paralyzed.

Evolution

Qwilfish does not evolve. However its Hisuian form can evolve into Overqwil after using strong style Poison Barrage twenty times.

    Trivia

    • Despite it's reputation as a bad swimmer, it is able to learn the HM moves Surf, Dive, and Waterfall and one of its abilities is Swift Swim.
    • In an early design for what would became Qwilfish (Japanese: ハリーセン Harysen), it was called Bukū, which was possibly a corruption of the word fugu (河豚, meaning "river pig"), which both are the Japanese word for pufferfish and the dish prepared from it.
      • There currently exist 2 prototypes of Qwilfish's evolution that may or may not have inspired Overqwil both named Shiberufugu (roughly “numbness pufferfish), one which had fiercer eyes and a modified spike design, as well as gaining 2 fins, and another, more well known one that hada lightning bolt symbol on its head and likely got reworked into Whiscash.
    • Qwilfish shares the same species with Igglybuff, Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff and Drifloon: they are all known as the Balloon Pokémon.
    • Barring Octillery’s existence, Qwilfish can be considered Remoraid’s counterpart, as both are Water types introduced in Generation II, are exclusive to Firered and Leafgreen respectively,
    • Qwilfish is the only Poison Type Pokémon that has a piscine body.
      • It is also the only Poison type to be in the Water 2 egg group.
    • Team Plasma grunts describe Hugh’s hairstyle to be similar to it.
    • Its Hisuan Form and Overqwil were hinted at in a book in Canalave Library in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl only.

    Origin

Qwilfish is based off of a pufferfish and their ability to puff up when threatening, showing spines covering their bodies. Its Poison type may be a reference to how some pufferfish have toxins that have no antidote. It may also reference how pufferfish are a common delicacy in Japan, often causing death due to its poisonous gland that is often sold and eaten. Its round shape and protruding spines also make it resemble a naval mine.

A likely reason why its Hisuan Form and Overqwil are Dark may be due to said aforementioned pufferfish delicacy spawned a black market for the latter half of the Tokugawa Shogunate's reign as the weakening grip on power of the rulers meant that the shogunate's ban on consumption (due to it killing many important people at the time) was more and more ignored.

    Etymology

Qwilfish is a portmanteau of "quill" and "fish."

Its Japanese name, Harīsen, is a shortening of 竜針千本 harisenbon (porcupinefish).
