Shedinja

Shedinja (Japanese: ヌケニン, HepburnNukenin) (sheh-DIN-ja[1]) is a Bug/Ghost-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It is born from the remains of Nincada when it evolves into Ninjask.

Biology

Physiology

Shedinja is a Pokémon based on a cicada's shed exoskeleton. Most of its body is light brown, but the abdomen is gray. It has four protrusions on its underside instead of legs; the top pair is brown, while the lower is gray. There are round protrusions on the side of its head with narrow slits for eyes. Two lines encircle its abdomen and a white halo floats above its head. On its back is a pair of tattered wings divided into three wingtips. A hole between its wings reveals that its body is completely hollow and dark, as it possesses no internal organs.

Behavior

Shedinja is an evolutionary byproduct of Nincada's evolution; the discarded husk. This Pokémon is said to have originated from a discarded bug shell, which then came to life. Peering into the crack on its back is said to steal one's spirit. They never move or twitch, and don't show any sign of breathing. However, they float perfectly still, in mid-air, despite only appearing to be hollow carapaces.

Natural abilities

No matter how much a Shedinja is trained, its HP always stays at one because of its special ability, Wonder Guard which allows it to take no damage, except from super effective moves.

Goh Shedinja

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Shedinja.
  • Similar to Ninjask, Shedinja's Attack and Defense are a reverse of Nincada's.
  • Shedinja is the only genderless Pokémon that is related by evolution to a Pokémon that can have a gender.
  • When it first appears, it knows all the same moves as the Ninjask that spawned it, but its learnset from then onward is entirely different.
  • In Generation III, Shedinja will appear in the player's party occupying the same type of Poké Ball that the Nincada host was caught with. From Generation IV onwards, the player must have a regular Poké Ball in their bag for Shedinja to appear.
  • Shedinja's ability, Wonder Guard, was commonly hacked onto the Dark/Ghost-type Sableye and Spiritomb, since those two Pokémon had no weaknesses, making them immune to direct damage. These were often referring to as "Wondereye" and "Wondertomb" respectively.
    • However, Shedinja's ability was used on Majin from Pokéstar Studios which was Dark/Ghost-type, making it immune to direct damage.
    • This was until Pokémon X/Y came along, which introduced the Fairy-type, making "Wondereye" and "Wondertomb" hacks less useful.
  • Despite HP being its lowest stat, Shedinja ironically gives out 2 HP EVs when defeated.
  • Due to Shedinja's sheer drop in its HP stat upon evolving from Nincada:
    • It is the only fully evolved Pokémon who has a lower base stat total than its pre-evolved form.
    • It has the lowest base HP stat of all Pokémon.
    • Its HP stat cannot be derived from the standard formula. Instead, its HP stat is always one. Had the standard formula been used, Shedinja, counterintuitively, would always have at least 112 HP at Level 100.
    • Shedinja is the only Pokémon that can level up without gaining any HP.
    • It is the only Pokémon who's base HP stat is lower than its pre-evolution.
    • It will always fail to use Substitute despite the move taking HP to use and Shedinja being capable of knowing it.
      • It can also learn Bide and Rest, but like Substitute, those moves will always fail.
        • Bide will fail because it requires taking damage to activate. Shedinja will faint if it takes ANY damage, rendering the move useless.
        • Rest will fail because Shedinja is at full HP, and Rest only fails if the user has Insomnia, Vital Spirit, Sweet Veil, or Purifying Salt as their ability, Uproar is in effect, the Pokémon is grounded during Electric Terrain or Misty Terrain, or the user has full HP.
    • HP EVs are completely useless for Shedinja, since it can never have more than 1 HP.
    • It is the only Pokémon that will always knock itself out from full HP when confused, due to having a single hit point.
    • Weather like Sandstorm and Hail will instantly cause it to faint, unless it is holding the Safety Goggles or Utility Umbrella.
    • Its IVs for HP cannot be calculated with the standard formula. It simply has the same HP IVs as the Nincada that shed it to begin with.
    • It is the only Pokémon that fully recovers from fainting when a normal Revive is used.
    • Its Defense and Sp. Def stats serve no purpose in battle, unless a Substitute was Baton Passed onto it or Shed Tail was used.
    • If it were hacked to have Sturdy (Gen V onward) as its Ability, it will always survive any direct damaging attack (as Sturdy will allow the Pokémon to survive any attack with 1 HP should it be full health when taking the hit), unless it were under the effects of Gastro Acid or Abilities that suppress other Abilities.
  • When Shedinja Dynamaxes, its HP remains at 1 no matter what its Dynamax Level is.
  • If the Nincada line were available in Scarlet/Violet, if Shedinja were to Terastallize into an Electric-type and is holding an Air Balloon, it would become completely invincible to every move that does direct damage, except for Stellar-type Tera Blast and Stellar-type Tera Starstorm. However, it would not be immune to indirect damage, which would still take it out in a single hit.

Origin

Shedinja is based on a shed cicada exoskeleton. It also appears to be based on the ninja technique of utsusemi in which a ninja replaces themselves with an object, usually to avoid an oncoming attack. "Utsusemi" can also refer to the shedding of a cicada shell. Shedinja's "wings" and "halo" also show inspiration from common depictions of angels.

Etymology

Shedinja is derived from shed and ninja.
