Biology

Physiology

Johtonian

Typhlosion looks like a wolverine with a mane of spiky flames around its neck. Unlike its other evolutions, it has a more badger-like appearance. It is mostly light yellow with a dark blue back.

Hisuian

Its ears droop beside its head. The fur on its back is a purplish-blue color, and extends to the front of its neck, forming a collar pattern. It has fire-producing spots all around its neck, covering the collar pattern, and these spots produce flames that wisp in a bright magenta color.

Behavior

Johtonian

Typhlosion are known to be barbarian and ferocious, and extremely temperamental. Their flames burn intensely whenever they are infuriated, and can cause serious degrees of burn on anyone who provokes them. They are extremely territorial and will not hesitate to attack anything that enters their domains with the powerful Eruption. Brutal fights between two Typhlosion over territory can sometimes devastate acres of grasslands. These Pokémon will flare up their manes to determine dominance; the individuals with larger manes gain control of the land, unless the losers decide to fight it out in battle. Females are highly protective of their young, caring for them until adolescence, and will destroy anything they see as threats to them. Despite their aggressive tendencies, Typhlosion are also extremely loyal and will defend their trainers with all their strength, making them strong choices for starters.

Hisuian

Hisuian Typhlosion appear to purify and guide lost forsaken souls to the afterlife. They are actually much mellower and laid-back than their relatives and rarely fight unless threatened. They spend much of their time staring at space to look at the flow of life energy and spirits. They occasionally consume wayward spirits before purifying these spirits with their flames. According to Sinnohan tradition, one should stay inside while these processions are passing, both for one's safety and out of respect for the deceased.

Despite their normally pacifistic disposition, they can still incinerate ones that anger them with their unfettered wrath until no ash of their offenders remain.

Natural abilities

Typhlosion can shoot their blasting flames from their backs to create explosive heat waves that can severely incinerate their foes like volcanic eruptions.

Hisuian Typhlosion can produce flames from their necks that resemble ghostly wisps, which can burn like a parade of ghastly inferno aim at their foes. These ghostly flames are said to have as many as 108, and all attack the opponent through adopting the countenance of ferocious beasts.

Evolution

Typhlosion evolves from Quilava starting at level 36. It is the final form of Cyndaquil.

Anime

Jimmy has a Typhlosion in the anime in Legend of Thunder. Two Typhlosions also appear in Gonna Rule the School! and Poetry Commotion! respectively.

Trivia

  • Typhlosion is the first Fire-type final evolution of a First partner Pokémon not to be dual-typed. It was the only Pokémon to have this until the introduction of Cinderace in Generation VIII.
  • Typhlosion is the only Fire-type Final Evolution of a First partner Pokémon that can only know Flare Blitz via breeding.
  • Typhlosion's stats match with Charizard's.
  • It has the highest total base stat of all the Johto Starters.
  • Typhlosion and its pre-evolutions are the only final evolution starter to learn Burn Up.
  • In National Pokédex order, Typhlosion is the first Pokémon outside the "original 151" whose National Pokédex number is a prime number.
  • Its Shiny Hisuian form has its Johtonian form's color scheme.
  • Its Hisuian form's usage of 108 spirits in Infernal Parade act as a reference to Spiritomb's number of souls.

Origin

Typhlosion appears to be based off badgers with traits of weasels and a porcupine. Its flame vents which form its quills may be similar to those of volcanoes.

Its Hisuian form is more inclined to weasel yokai that tend to appear in "Night Parade of One Hundred Demons" (Hyakki Yagyo). In Japan, weasels are rumored and alleged to bring about misfortunes with their cries and mass fires when they gather. It appears to be based on psychopomp figures, common in many mythologies. It may also be based on Kamuy-huci, the Ainu goddess of fire and the hearth, whose fire is said to act as a gateway between the human world and the spirit world. The flames on its neck are reminiscent of a necklace of magatama beads, which are associated with various spiritual beliefs, including the ancient Japanese practice of burying them in graves along with the deceased as offerings for the gods.

Etymology

Typhlosion comes from the words typhoon and explosion.

Bakufuun comes from the words bakufuu (blast) and typhoon.
