Tirtouga

Tirtouga (Japanese: プロトーガ, HepburnPurotooga) (teer-TOO-guh[1]) is a Generation V Water/Rock-type Fossil Pokémon. Tirtouga can be revived from the Cover Fossil.

Biology

Physiology

Tirtouga is a reptilian Pokémon that resembles the Archelon, a group of extinct sea turtles. Its body is mainly deep blue, and it bears a black/blue shell on its back. Its skin is a lighter blue, with its face covered in a marking that is the same color as its shell. It has more of these markings in the middle of its fins.

Behavior

Though slow and clumsy on land, they nevertheless could beach themselves onto shores in order to capture unsuspecting prey. Indeed, some studies suggest that a sizable portion of their meals came from terrestrial prey. Tirtouga are thought to have gone extinct because they was unable to compete with similar chelonians; although their competitors were slower, they also required less food to survive and reproduce.

Evolution

Tirtouga evolves into Carracosta at level 37.

Anime

Tirtouga, alongside Carracosta appear in "A Restoration Confrontation! Part 1" and "A Restoration Confrontation! Part 2".

Trivia

  • Tirtouga and its evolution Carracosta are the only Fossil Pokémon to have the Rock type as a secondary type instead of a primary one.
  • Drednaw is also a Water/Rock type turtle Pokémon.

Origin

Tirtouga is based on the Archelon, an extinct group of giant sea turtles.

Etymology

Tirtouga comes from tortuga (Spanish for "turtle"), dirt (due to it being a rock type), and tartaruga (Italian for "tortoise").
