Vivillon

Vivillon (Japanese: ビビヨン, HepburnBibiyon) (VIH-vee-yon[1]) is a Bug/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

Biology

Physiology

It is adorned with colorful decorative patterns on its wings that are used to scatter its scales or create a strong wind to attack. It strongly resembles Butterfree with respect to its body style.

Special abilities

Struggle Bug is a Bug-type move that it can use. Struggle Bug lowers the Special Attack of opponent's Pokémon while dealing damage.

Its ability Compound Eyes (which boosts accuracy by 30% of the move's original accuracy value) comes in handy when Vivillon learns Hurricane at Lv50.

As demonstrated in the Anime, the scales that Vivillon scatters from its wings are able to pacify a person's fighting spirit.

Behavior

Vivillon is a docile and friendly Pokémon that is very loyal to its trainer.

Evolution

Vivillon can be evolved from Spewpa at level 12, which is the evolved form of Scatterbug.

Trivia

  • There are 20 different wing designs, ranging in color and style, that Vivillon can have on its wings.
    • 18 of them are based on what region that 3DS is registered/set. From each area, it differs based on the region's climate, continent and even within different regions of some of the largest countries on Earth.
    • The Poké Ball and Fancy Pattern are event-exclusive.
  • Vivillon has the third widest variety of obtainable List of Pokémon with form differences, having a total of 20. It is bested by Unown, which has 28 forms, and Alcremie, which has 63 cream and Sweet combinations with a Gigantamax form.
  • Vivillon's Pokédex number is 666, which is usually associated with demons or the devil.

Origin

Vivillon is based on a butterfly. Considering its pre-evolutions possible inspiration from tapestry moth caterpillars, it may also be based on their adult stage. Considering the larval stages eat cloth and fabric from objects, its wings may be based on a knitted quilt. Its many forms based on its location may be based on the concept of divergent evolution. The square design of its wing pattern may also be based on pixel art.

Etymology

Vivillon comes from vivid and papillon (French for "butterfly").
