Trivia

  • It was first revealed on the official Pokémon website on May 28, 2010, along with Reshiram. This makes the two the first Pokémon simultaneously revealed worldwide.
  • Zekrom has similar traits of those found in Zapdos.
    • Both are a part of a Legendary Trio.
    • Both are a part of a fire-electric-ice trio.
    • Both are the electric type in their trio.
    • Both of the names of these legendary Pokémon start with "Z".
  • Zekrom, along with Reshiram and Kyurem, is part of the Tao Trio. Zekrom embodies mechanism.
  • The roar used for Zekrom is Megaguirus', a monster from the Godzilla franchise. In Movie 14, though, he had the roar of Baragon, another monster from the same franchise. Reshiram received Megaguirus' roar, as a result.
  • Zekrom when speaking telepathically is voiced by Hideki Takahashi in Pokémon The Movie: Black/White and Marc Thompson in its dub. Zekrom's speaks in a raspy voice similar to Kyurem.
  • Zekrom also appears in a Dream World minigame. If the WIFI Zekrom from the Black version game is brought over to the Dream World, in the special home, Victini appears. Afterwards, Victini attempts to break the barrier, but its attacks were futile, so the player has to ask their WIFI Zekrom for help by collecting power ups. The finishing move is Zekrom using an electrical attack to blow up the barrier.
  • Zekrom's signature move, Bolt Strike, is Thundurus' species.
  • It has a strong resemblance with Red-Eyes Black Dragon of Yu-Gi-Oh due to having red eyes and black body. Its "ideals" theme also reflects the optimistic yet impulsive personality Joey Wheeler, whose signature card is Red-Eyes Black Dragon, has. Ironically, Red-Eyes Black Dragon has fire powers while its counterpart, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, has lightning powers.
  • Zekrom, along with Reshiram, appeared on the 2010 Macy's Parade as special units, alongside the Pikachu balloon.

Origin

Zekrom, when paired with Reshiram, may be based on yin and yang, a concept originating in Chinese philosophy. Yin and yang are intended to represent dualism, which can be seen in the design of Zekrom which has a darker, masculine, and more industrial appearance in contrast to Reshiram's lighter, feminine, and more natural appearance. It may also be based on deities in Zoroastrianism, two of which are depicted as equally powerful, though they represent different powers and values, with Zekrom being based on Angra Mainyu, who was associated with darkness. Physically, Zekrom overall seems to resemble a European dragon and an electrcic turbine.

Etymology

Zekrom comes from kura (Japanese for "black"). Ze was also used in its name as it sounds harder compared to the Re in Reshiram's name. This was done due to Zekrom being considered a more physically powered Pokémon.
