Quick Answers

What type of Pokémon is Silvally? toggle section
Silvally, a Synthetic Pokémon from Generation VII, is a Normal-type Pokémon with the ability to alter its type when holding specific items due to its RKS System ability. Partly organic and partly cybernetic, Silvally is a cyborg. It gained Legendary Pokémon status on October 16, 2017, being the only Pokémon to transition from non-legendary to legendary.

How does Silvally differ from its pre-evolution? toggle section
Upon evolving from Type: Null, Silvally's helmet is removed, unveiling a bird-like head with a metallic beak and a crest similar to a cockatoo's. Its neck fur and tail fin change from gray to white, and its speed increases due to the helmet's removal. Created from a fusion of cells from all 18 Pokémon types, Silvally can change its type freely. Despite its rough nature, it is loyal to its Trainer and protective.

Biology

Physiology

Aside from the removal of its helmet, Silvally differs little from its pre-evolution. Its crested, bird-like head is revealed, possessing a metallic beak, two bolts on either side of its head, pointed red ears and a crest on its head resembling a cockatoo's. The fur around its neck and the fin on its tail also turn from gray to white upon evolving. It has a lion-like body, making it resemble a griffin.

Behavior

Despite being a rough Pokémon, it trusts its Trainer who will do anything to protect them when they face dangers. The weight of the helmet slowed it down, and upon its removal, Silvally's speed increases substantially.

Natural Abilities

As it was based on a "Pokémon spoken of in mythology" in legends from Sinnoh libraries (heavily implied to be Arceus), it possesses great power as it was created as a chimerical fusion of cells from all 18 types. As such, with the use of its Ability, RKS System, Silvally can change between types when holding a Memory Disc.

    Appearances

    Anime

Silvally first appeared in SM049: Mission: Total Recall!, where it evolved from Gladion's Type: Null where it was trying to save Lillie from Faba. This also helps Lillie remember that Silvally was the one who saved her from the Ultra Beast Nihilego in the past, which results in Lillie being able to touch Pokémon again.

    Supporting

    Trivia

    • Technically, Silvally (then called Type: Full) came before Type: Null as it was too powerful to control and such fitted with a helmet to limit its power.
      • This may be a canon example of devolution.
    • Silvally's base experience yield in the original Alola games was 114. It has been boosted to 257 since.
    • According to the dex entry, Gladion gave "Silvally" its name.
      • This another Pokémon being named by a trainer, with Rotom being discovered and named by Charon, Team Galactic's scientist.
    • Silvally itself appears unchanged upon evolution, only removing its helmet and turning its tail and mane white. This is similar to Slowbro in which a Shellder attaches to Slowpoke and makes it bipedal but otherwise changes very little.
    • While Silvally is a mechanical creature with Memory Discs and a disc reader system its official descriptions mention cells, implying that Silvally is composed partly of organic tissues and partly of cybernetic parts, making it a cyborg.
    • Silvally was officially confirmed to be a Legendary Pokémon on October 16, 2017.[1]
      • Silvally is the only formerly non-legendary Pokémon to acquire the legendary status.
    • Silvally is similar to Arceus as both are Normal-type Pokémon that, thanks to their ability, can change type if they hold a certain item. Their coloring is also similar as their normal forms are often covered in white and their shiny forms turn into a shiny gold color.
      • Furthermore, both have a unique move (Judgment and Multi-Attack) which their ability affects, allowing them to gain STAB for every type they are.
    • Despite being programmed in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon to be able to learn all three Pledge moves, Silvally can only legitimately be taught Grass Pledge.

    Origin

Silvally is based on a griffin (gryphon), a legendary creature with the head and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion. It also incorporates elements of cyborgs, as well as chimeras, and heraldic eagles. The bolts on either side of its head may be a reference to Frankenstein's Monster (as its prototype form Type: Null/Full was created by Faba, a scientist), while the shape of its crest may also draw inspiration from a cockatoo. It might also be based on angels of the apocalypse due to its status and purpose as an "Ultra Beast Killer", (with the Ultra Beasts resembling the evil Beasts of the Apocalypse who would attack the Earth and its people).

Its RKS System Ability is based on Arceus' Multitype.

    Etymology

Silvally comes from silver and ally.
