Voltorb

Voltorb (Japanese: ビリリダマ, HepburnBiriridama) (VOLT-orb[1]) is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It has an Electric/Grass-type Hisuian form introduced in Generation VIII.

Biology

Physiology

Kantonian

Voltorb is a Pokémon that looks like a large Poké Ball. Spherical in shape, Voltorb's top half is colored red while its bottom half is white. Voltorb does not have much else in features besides its eyes, which usually indicate that it is angry.

Hisuian

Voltorb's Hisuian form instead resembles the ancient Pokeballs of the era, with a hole on top, akin to Wailord's spout. Their body surfaces' texture is akin to the one of wood-grain.

Behaviour

Kantonian

Voltorb have very volatile temperaments that induce their explosions. They are generally found in power plants and other areas with electric fields where it feeds. The species was first discovered in the plant where modern Poké Balls were invented. Notably, Alpha Sapphire 's Pokédex entry for Voltorb contains a conspiracy theory about how it was a Poké Ball exposed to an energy pulse.

Power plants, and areas with electrical activity are where they are commonly spotted.

Hisuian

Its Hisuian form are friendlier and more excitable, tending to cluster around people and Pokémon, which prove a nuisance when they Discharge even out of a slight provocation. Therefore, people tend to temporarily plug the hole on Hisuian Voltorb's head and kicking it out of their settlements.

Forests and fields are where Hisuian Voltorb reside in.

Natural abilities

This Pokémon looks just like a Poké Ball, but it is also dangerous because it may electrocute or explode on touch, to Voltorb's assailant after a contact move defeats it.

Hisiuan Voltorb contain numerous seeds, though it is impossible to examine these seeds. They discharge stored electricity from the hole on top of their bodies.

Evolution

Voltorb evolves into Electrode at level 30.

Trivia

  • In Generation I, Voltorb was a counterpart to Magnemite. Both were pure Electric-type Pokémon that spawned in similar locations. They both evolved at Level 30 and were based on inanimate objects. Both also debuted in Red & Blue and were also both genderless. Ever since the introduction of the Steel-type and Magnezone, the main similarities were broken.
  • Since Voltorb have a Hisuian form, their prescense retcons some Pokedex entries that imply that Voltorbs and Pokeballs emerged at the same time.
  • Voltorb has the lowest Attack stat of all Electric-type Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver Version, the English and European versions contain a game called Voltorb Flip is introduced in place of slot machines (likely due to moral reasons about gambling). The game is similar to Minesweeper and largely focuses on flipping over cards to multiply the coins currently earned. Some cards, however, have Voltorb on them which will cause the player to lose coins when flipped by blowing up.
  • For some reason, Voltorb is recommended in a Prima Games guide for Heartgold and Soulsilver for Disc Catch, yet isn't a Flying type.

Origin

Voltorb is based on a Poké Ball. It more resembles the version in the series' roots (Capsule monsters). In a meta sense, it may be based on the "mimic enemy" archetype common in video games, where an enemy disguises itself as a useful item to lure players into combat, similar to Foongus. Its round shape and tendency to self destruct may make it based on a bomb, as well as self destruct buttons (which are colored red most of the time, and Voltorb is listed as red). It may also be based on the Tsukumogami species of yokai, inanimate objects that gain a spirit/sentience upon their 100th year of existence (which may also be referenced by how Voltorb is #100 in the National Pokédex). The species' unpredictable tendency to explode, as well as its shape and name, may be a reference to ball lightning.

Its Hisuian form is largely based on the design of Poké Balls in Hisui while also being based on the "mimic" archetype that Kantonian Voltorb are based on. It may also be based the fact that Poké Balls can be made using Apricorns.

Etymology

Voltorb is a portmanteau of "volt" (the unit of electrical potential) and "orb" (a sphere).

Biriridama is a portmanteau of ビリビリ (biribiri, onomatopoeia for electrical shocks) and 玉 (tama, ball).
