Tauros

Tauros (Japanese: ケンタロス, HepburnKentarosu) (TORE-ros[1]) is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. In Paldea, it is a Fighting-type with three different variations: Combat Breed which is pure Fighting-type, Blaze Breed which is Fighting/Fire-type, and Aqua Breed which is Fighting/Water-type. It is thought to be Miltank's male counterpart.

Biology

Physiology

Tauros resembles a bull.

Its Kantonian form is a tan color, with a brown mane that covers part of its stout body, a slightly chubby belly, somewhat fat haunches, and a hump on its back. Tauros has blue-grey hooves and horns. It also has three long tails. On its head, he has three blue circles from its forehead down to its eyes.

Its Paldean variants are dark grey in color with a black mane.

Combat Breed Tauros has short, rounded, almost straight horns, and its mane and tails are shaped similarly to Kantonian Tauros.

Blaze Breed Tauros has sharp horns that point forward and bent at right angles, its mane is spiky with streaks of red, and its three tails are intertwined.

Aqua Breed Tauros has horns that usually point upward but can rotate backward, and each horn has two round, bulbous forms as well as a hole on its tip. Its mane flows downward and is shaped like a beard, with five teardrop-shaped blue accents on it. Its tails are usually straight, but can bend to form a propeller shape, which aids it in swimming.

Behavior

Tauros is a violent, rowdy Pokémon that whips itself into a frenzy using its three tails. It serves as a warning to others that Tauros is about to charge with astonishing speed. Once it starts charging, it is unable to stop or change course until it hits something. It will lock horns with others of its kind, and the herd's protector takes pride in its battle-scarred horns. While still ferocious, Tauros are calmer in Alola than elsewhere, likely due to the region's climate. The practice of riding Tauros is believed to have started in Alola. However, Tauros in Galar are more volatile and don't want to be ridden.

In Paldea, Tauros are bred into three different subspecies (Combat, Blaze, and Aqua), each with specific traits.

Combat Breed Tauros are fierce and possess a muscular build. They are experts of close-ranged combat and will use their horns to strike at the enemy's weak spot.

Blaze Breed Tauros are well named from their ability to emit superheated air from their nostrils. They are also able to increase the temperature of their horns to a blistering 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. The horns leave the opponent with burn marks and wounds. The tails of a Blaze Breed Tauros are unique in that they are intertwined rather than separated.

Aqua Breed Tauros has more body fat, which allows them to easily float on the water's surface. Their horns are capable of expelling high pressurized water jets that not only aid in propulsion but also have enough strength to pierce through enemy defenses.

Habitat

It lives and travels in herds on plains and grasslands.

Evolution

Tauros does not evolve.

Anime

Ash Tauros

Ash caught 30 Tauros in The Legend of Dratini, an episode that had been banned because of using a projectile weapon (a handgun).

Trivia

  • In the Generation III games, Tauros's back sprite portrays its hump as being taller than its mane, despite other games showing the two as being level with each other. This may simply be a design error, or it may be stating that Hoennese Tauros, for whatever reason, have larger humps than Tauros in other regions.
  • Blaze Breed Tauros is the first Fire and Fighting Pokémon that isn't a starter.
    • However, Blaze Breed Tauros' type is reversed, as it's Fighting/Fire Pokémon.
  • Despite Aqua Breed Tauros's Violet Pokédex entry stating that it has a high amount of body fat, it can't legitimately have the ability Thick Fat, instead being able to have the same abilities as other Paldean Tauros.

Origin

Tauros is based on a bull. Its humped shoulders and the dots on its forehead may be derived from zebu (cattle with large, fatty humps on their shoulders), considered to be sacred in India, the dots representing bindi marks.

Paldean Tauros is based on the Spanish fighting bull. Aqua Breed Tauros may be inspired by water buffalos.

Etymology

Tauros comes from taurus, Latin for "bull."

Kentarosu may come from the Greek Κένταυρος (centaur).
