Pinsir

Pinsir (Japanese: カイロス, HepburnKairosu) (PIN-sir[1]) is a Bug-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. It has a Mega Evolution which is a Bug/Flying type. It is Heracross' counterpart.

Biology

Physiology

They seem to be based on a flat-stag beetle and have long, pricked horns on their heads. Their whole body is a light brown color with three claws on each limb. Their mouths have multiple sharp teeth arranged horizontally rather than vertically. Their feet are thicker than their hands. As Mega Pinsir, it gains a large pair of clear, yellow wings with an area of orange venation near the base. Additionally, a set of brown elytra appear. Slicing through each side of the elytra is a pair of orange blades. Its arms are longer and it has a T-shaped spike on each forearm. The pincers on its head are now longer with larger spikes, and its eyes are now yellow.

Behavior

Pinsir are known for their strong pincers, using them aggressively in battle to either split foes into two or toss foes that are too tough to be crushed. Despite this nature, they grow weak in cold environments and will bury into dirt, sand, or leaves with their two pincers sticking up from the ground. They are also known to enjoy tree sap and Honey like many other Bug-type Pokémon. Pinsir lives deep in the temperate forests and jungles, where it burrows underground or hides in the treetops on nights cold enough to render it immobile. They tend to group together as a result.

In the Alola region, they are known to get along well with Heracross while they have a strong rivalry with Vikavolt.

The size of their pincers are used to judge attractiveness, the bigger the more attractive.

When they mega evolve, Pinsir appears to be in a constant state of excitement and rarely touches the ground due to its newfound flight.

Natural abilities

Pinsir can have the ability Hyper Cutter or the ability Mold Breaker. Hyper Cutter prevents reduction of Pinsir's Attack stat. Mold Breaker allows Pinsir to use moves that would otherwise be non-effective because of an ability. Very rarely, they may have Moxie, which boosts their Attack by one stage after they defeat an opponent. A Pinsir's horns can crush many objects and allow it to pick up extremely heavy things. All Mega Pinsir have the ability Aerilate, which converts all their Normal moves into Flying type moves, making them stronger too. They can fly at about 30mph/50 km/h and use their horns to pierce enemies before shreading them. In fact, it can lift something 10 times its weight and still fly easily.

Evolution

Pinsir does not evolve, but it does Mega Evolve using its Pinsirite.

Trivia

  • Before the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver, it was speculated that Heracross would've been an evolution or a pre-evolution of Pinsir.
  • Pinsir is currently the only non-Fighting-type Pokémon able to learn Vital Throw.
  • Despite being brown in the Pokédex, Pinsir is gray in some sprites.
  • Despite Pinsir being a Bug-type, it didn't learn any Bug-type moves via level up until Generation IV.
    • In the second and third generations, Pinsir could only learn one Bug-type move; Fury Cutter.
  • In the episode Challenge of the Samurai, there is a Pinsir that knows Tackle, a move Pinsir can't normally learn.
  • In Generation I, Pinsir was a counterpart to Scyther. Both were the strongest Bug-type Pokémon prior to Generation II. Both were version exclusive in Red & Blue and had no evolutionary lines. They also had the same BST with the same Special Attack stat. Every since the introduction of Scizor, the main similarities were broken.
    • Nowadays, Pinsir can be seen as a counterpart to Heracross. Both are Bug-types based on tropical beetles and both don't have an evolutionary line but can Mega Evolve. Both of them are version exclusives in X & Y in which their Mega Stones are also version exclusives which can be found in Santalune Forest. They are also able to learn several Fighting-type moves.
  • In the Beta release of Gold & Silver, Pinsir had an evolution known as Plux.
  • Vikavolt and Pinsir are both based on stag beetles.
    • This extends to the point where one of Pinsir's Pokémon Trading Cards states that its greatest rival in Alola is Vikavolt.
  • While Bug-type Pokémon is weak to Ice, Pinsir is the only pure Bug to be explicitly said to dislike the cold.
  • Mega Pinsir is tied for the highest base stat value of all Bug-type Pokémon, alongside Heracross and Scizor's Mega Evolved Forms, as well as Genesect.
    • It also has the highest Attack stat to date of all non Legendary Flying types.
  • For some reason, Pinsir's base and Mega Forms had the same shape in Pokémon X and Y.
  • Pinsir is very similar to the Kirby mid-boss Buggzy. Both are anthropormorphic stag bettles with powerful pincers to grab and throw enemies with.

Origin

Pinsir is based on a stag beetle, mostly a mix of the Sawtooth Stag, the Miyama Stag Beetle and its Mega Evolution has similar pincers to that of the Calcodes Versicolor.

Etymology

Pinsir comes from the word "pincer".

Kairosu may be a combination of the Greek letter Χ (カイ kai) and cross (referring to its scissor-like horns). Alternatively, it may be a combination of 傀 kai (large), 魁偉 kai (brawny), or 刈 kai (cut) combined with κοριός korios (Greek for "bug").

Name in other languages

  • Japanese: カイロス Kairosu
  • French: Scarabrute
  • Korean: 쁘사이저 Ppeusaizeo
