Pyukumuku

Pyukumuku (Japanese: ナマコブシ, HepburnNamakobushi) (PYOO-koo-MOO-koo[1]) is a water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

Biology

Physiology

Pyukumuku is a marine Pokémon with an ovoid, black body. Its face has two beady, pink eyes and a white mouth shaped roughly like a star or Daimonji. Two lines of three pink spikes run down each side of its back. The middle spike of each line is about twice as long as the others are. A fluffy white puff forms its tail.

Behavior

Pyukumuku hate when their spikes and mouth are touched, and they will spit out their organs when someone steps on them. If stepped on, one will expel its fist-like organs and smack the perpetrator. Pyukumuku tend to find a spot they like and stay there, even returning to the same spot if moved. Once all the food in their favorite spot has been consumed, they will continue to stay there to the point of starvation. These stalwart creatures will not budge once they find a favored spot; they would first starve or dehydrate before moving.

They are covered in viscous mucus that can keep them moist for a week on land. It can also be used as a moisturizer and sunburn treatment. When they wish to return to the sea, they may hitch a ride with Pokémon like Pelipper.

Natural abilities

A Pyukumuku is capable of spitting its organs out through its mouth. The white organs can take different shapes, such as a fist. This ability is also utilised by their signature in-battle ability, Innards Out, where it will use the expelled organs to deal all their available health at the time they are knocked out, much like Final Gambit. Their bodies are coated with a viscous fluid that allows them to stay on land for a week without drying out. This fluid is also beneficial to people as a moisturizer.

Pokédex entries

  • Sun

It lives in shallow seas, such as areas near a beach. It can eject its internal organs, which it uses to engulf its prey or battle enemies.

  • Moon

These Pokémon line the beaches. The sticky mucous that covers their bodies can be used to soothe sunburned skin. How convenient!

  • Ultra Sun

The tradition known as Pyukumuku chucking started from the custom of throwing Pyukumuku back into the sea after they wash onshore.

  • Ultra Moon

Its entire body is covered in its own slime. If you accidentally step on one, you’ll slip, and it will get mad and smack you!

  • Sword

It lives in warm, shallow waters. If it encounters a foe, it will spit out its internal organs as a means to punch them.

  • Shield

It's covered in a slime that keeps its skin moist, allowing it to stay on land for days without drying up.

    Trivia

    • Pyukumuku is incapable of learning any attacking moves other than Bide and Counter. Because of this, it is one of the very few Water-type Pokémon that is completely unable to learn a move that counters Grass types, since almost every Water type can learn Ice Beam.
    • In Super Smash Bros., Pyukumuku is one of the Pokémon that can be freed from Poké Balls. During this time, it uses the move Counter.
    • Pyukumuku spits its organs from its mouth, while real sea cucumbers spit their organs from their anus.
    • Pyukumuku is tied with Shuckle and Munchlax for having the lowest base speed at 5. This also makes it the slowest Water type.

    Origin

Pyukumuku is based on a sea cucumber, which much like Pyukumuku can expel its innards to deter predators. Its round shape, pink protrusions, and its fluffy tail may make it based on a sea bunny, a type of sea slug that sports rhinophores resembling rabbit ears.

Its Shiny coloration may be based on normal cucumbers.

    Etymology

Pyukumuku is likely a combination of puke, cucumber, and mucus.

Its Japanese name, Namakobushi, comes from namako (sea cucumber) and kobushi (fist).
