Spiritomb

Spiritomb (Japanese: ミカルゲ, HepburnMikaruge) (SPIRI-toom[sic][1]) is a Ghost/Dark-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology

Physiology

Spiritomb is somewhat ghost-like in appearance. It was formed by 108 spirits. The main body of a Spiritomb appears like a purple, swirling vortex with green eyes and a black spiral for a pupil in its left eye. Around its face are green orbs that encircle it. Its "body" is connected to a stone base, with a small fissure in it supposing it was released when the seal was broken half way but still bound to the stone. Spiritomb's mouth is green like its eyes. The "face" of the Odd Keystone is not visible when Spiritomb is present. The shiny variant of Spiritomb has a blue vortex, and purple dots, eyes, and mouth.

Special abilities

It is said that Spiritomb are composed of 108 spirits, but could as well be the reason for its Pokédex number to be "108" referring to the 108 spirits.

As shown in the anime, Spiritomb's composite spirits have the capacity of possessing living beings.

Behavior

According to The Keystone Pops!, they can be as aggressive and destructive as their composite spirits, and would lash out recklessly without thinking. However, The Spectral Express! also shows they can also be rather cross if one of their spirits are missing and go on a rampage.

Evolution

Spiritomb does not evolve.

Appearances

Anime

Spiritomb made its main debut in The Keystone Pops! where it was the main antagonist of that story. It was sealed away by an Aura Guardian and his Pikachu 500 years prior and then sealed once more by Ash and Pikachu.

Another Spiritomb made an appearance in The Spectral Express! where one of its 108 souls ended up possessing Ash's body.

Trivia

  • Spiritomb is one of the two Pokémon that are Ghost/Dark-type, the other being Sableye.
    • Until the Fairy type was introduced, they had no real weakness independent of abilities possessed.
      • Spiritomb along with Sableye was the one of a few Pokémon with no weaknesses until Generation VI. The other Pokémon with no weaknesses is the Tynamo line due to being Electric-type and having Levitate, cancelling out its only weakness which is Ground.
    • As such, both were often hacked to have Wonder Guard to be immune to all direct damage.
  • Spiritomb is highly associated with the number 108. Some of the references to this number are:
    • 108 is its Sinnoh Pokédex number.
    • Spiritomb holds 108 spirits inside it.
    • Its Defense and Special Defense stats are both 108.
    • Its weight is 108.0 kilograms.
    • It can be found in Sea Mauville (also known as Route 108).
    • A quest in Pokémon GO involves collecting 108 Berries and catching 108 Pokémon. Once this is completed, Spiritomb is encountered.
    • In Sword and Shield, you have to talk to 32 other unique players, interact with the Odd Keystone at Ballimere Lake, then leave and re-enter to spawn it.
    • Most Sinnoh based games (sans Pokémon Legends: Arceus) force you to have to do something similar, albeit you have to place the Keystone at Hallowed Tower, then use the Sinnoh Underground to talk to 32 players (Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum)/32 NPCs (Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl).
  • The Spiritomb featured in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl is one of the few instances of a Pokemon being actually malicious on their own accord.
  • In the Mystery Dungeon Series, Spiritomb retreats into its keystone when it falls asleep.
    • In PJ091, Spiritomb also retreated into the Keystone when calmed down.

Origin

Spiritomb might be based on a Buddhist tradition in Japan which involves ringing a bell 108 times to repel 108 temptations in order to achieve Nirvana. It may also be based on a stone monument present in one of the Classic Chinese Novels, Water Margin/水浒传. This stone monument was ordered to be removed, but upon doing so, unleashes 108 previously sealed demons, These 108 demons, having atoned for their sins, become the 108 Stars of Destiny. They are reincarnated centuries later as 108 outlaws, the heroes of the novel. Additionally, it may also be based on a type of spirit called a Jibakurei, a ghost that is bound to a single place, such as Yo-kai watch's Jibanyan. It is also similar to a Deildegast, a Norwegian folklore spirit that is forced to haul around a boundary stone as punishment for moving one while it was alive. Spiritomb could also be based on the 108 men who wanted to marry Penelope in Odyssey, but were killed by Odysseus.

Etymology

Spiritomb comes from spirit and tomb.
