Cramorant

Cramorant (Japanese: ウッウ, HepburnU'u) (KRAM-uh-rihnt[1]) is a Flying/Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII.

Biology

Physiology

Cramorant is a tall cormorant Pokémon covered in mostly blue feathers. It has green eyes, a long beak, and black webbed feet. It also has a gray feathery tuft around its long neck in a form of a bib.

Behavior

Cramorant will sometimes swallow anything which can fit in its mouth whether its food or not, only to spit it out in a hurry when it realizes its error. It is also forgetful but will never forget a trainer it grows to trust, though trainers must never try to take any of its food lest they be attacked. Cramorant nest on seaside bluffs in large, raucous colonies. They glide high above the waves in search of fish. When they sense movement beneath, they will dive beak-first to snap up their catches. Cramorant can in fact forcefully dislodge stuck prey to attack; more graphically, they can also regurgitate the partially digested contents of their stomachs. In fact, this is how they feed their young.

Natural Abilities

Cramorant is supposedly so strong that it can defeat foes in 1 hit. Apparently, even a little shock is supposed to activate its signature Gulp Missile Ability, which does extra damage on contact when Cramorant is hit with a contact move while in its gorging or gulping forms, the latter having a chance of paralysis.

Pokédex entries

  • Sword

It's so strong that it can knock out some opponents in a single hit, but it also may forget what it's battling midfight.
Gulping Form: Cramorant's gluttony led it to try to swallow an Arrokuda whole, which in turn led to Cramorant getting an Arrokuda stuck in its throat.
Gorging Form: This Cramorant has accidentally gotten a Pikachu lodged in its gullet. Cramorant is choking a little, but it isn't really bothered.

  • Shield

This hungry Pokémon swallows Arrokuda whole. Occasionally, it makes a mistake and tries to swallow a Pokémon other than its preferred prey.
Gulping Form: The slightest shock is sometimes enough to get this Pokémon to spit out the Arrokuda lodged in its throat.
Gorging Form: The half-swallowed Pikachu is so startled that it isn't struggling yet, but it's still looking for a chance to strike back.

  • Scarlet

Cramorant instinctively swallow everything whole. They're at their most formidable when they're struggling to swallow overly large prey.
Gulping Form:Cramorant is constantly on the hunt for food along riverbanks. It loves Arrokuda when it finds them, it swallows them whole without a thought.
Gorging Form:Its throat is clearly not wide enough to swallow a Pikachu, and yet Cramorant makes no move to release its catch.

  • Violet

It's an incredibly poor learner because it uses the bare minimum amount of energy for its brain. It focuses on battling instead.
Gulping Form:Cramorant takes advantage of Arrokuda's frantic thrashing to help spit Arrokuda out at high speed.
:Gorging Form:With a Pikachu stuck in its throat, Cramorant can use Pikachu's prickling electricity to give its opponents a shock.

    Trivia

    • Cramorant's Japanese name is pronounced similarly to Wooloo's Japanese name (Uuruu).
    • Although Cramorant is said to be able to defeat foes in one hit, it cannot learn any one-hit knockout moves.

    Origin

Cramorant is based on the Cormorant and the fulmar, two common seabirds in the British Isles. The cormorant part may be based on Cormorant Fishing, a technique that uses trained cormorants to fish. The fulmar part may give inspiration to its Ability Gulp Missile. Fulmar's are known to vomit defensively in order to scare away foes. The plumage on its chest also resembles a dinner bib.

Its Shiny coloration is possibly a parody of an incident in which a seagull covered in curry was mistaken for a rare sea bird, as the spillage had turned its feathers a vibrant orange.

    Etymology

Cramorant is a combination of the word cram (which reflects its gluttonous nature) and cormorant.

Its Japanese name, U'u, comes from u~ (the sound of gasping, choking, or eating) and u (cormorant)
