Clodsire

Clodsire (Japanese: ドオー, HepburnDo'oo) (KLAWD-seye-er[1]) is a Poison/Ground-type Pokémon in Generation IX.

Biology

Physiology

Clodsire is an amphibious Pokémon with a round body and is quadrupedal. It is a dark brown Pokémon with some lighter brown on the bottom half of it and forms a wave-like pattern in the center where the two colors meet. Clodsire has a large mouth paired with small black eyes and small nostrils. On its four stubby legs, it has 3 toes each, while a short fin travels from its lower back down to its wide, chubby tail. Along its back are six lavender colored spots which, if Clodsire is attacked, will cause large spines to stick out of them.

Behavior

Clodsires live deep in swamps. To help Wooper, they will ferry them across the water on their backs.

Natural abilities

Similarly to their regional cousin Quagsire, Clodsire can learn Water Absorb as an ability. Like their pre-evolved forms, Clodsire are adapted to living on land and are more durable then their cousins, but are more focused on defense and bulk. Clodsire use their spines as a self-defense mechanism, but it is considered dangerous and risky for it to do so.

Evolution

It evolves from Paldean Wooper starting at level 20.

Trivia

  • Clodsire is the only cross-generational evolution introduced in Generation IX (so far) that evolves from a regional form.

Origin

Clodsire is believed to be based on the Iberian ribbed newt, which are known for their sharp ribs which can puncture through their sides. Clodsire also resembles a smooth-head blobfish and a giant salamander. Given its Poison type, brown color, the fact that it's larger and heavier than Quagsire, and the fact that it's native to Paldea, based on the Iberian Peninsula, Clodsire may be partially inspired by Del Lago, a giant salamander mutated by the Las Plagas parasite that serves as the first boss of Resident Evil 4, which was set in Spain.

Etymology

Clodsire is a portmanteau of "clod" (a chunk of soil or an unintelligent person), "sire" (an archaic, respectful form of address for someone of high status), and Quagsire.

Other languages

Doō, its Japanese name, comes from 土 (do, earth), 王 (ō, king), ヌオー (Nuō, Quagsire's Japanese name), and possibly "d'oh," an interjection expressing frustration at one's own foolishness.
