Slowbro

Slowbro (Japanese: ヤドラン, HepburnYadoran) (SLOW-bro[1]) is a Water/Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I. In Generation VIII, exclusive to the Isle of Armor, Slowbro has a Galarian Form that is a Poison/Psychic type.

Biology

Physiology

Shellbro
Shellder

Kantonian Slowbro

Slowbro is a bipedal, pink Pokémon with a tan, striped belly and a tan muzzle. It has large, vacant eyes, curled ears, and two pointed teeth protruding from its upper jaw. On its hands, it has three clawed fingers, and two clawed toes on its feet. There is a Shellder attached to its tail. This Shellder has a gray, spiraled shell with darker gray spots. There are several spikes across the surface of the Shellder, and it holds onto Slowbro with many sharp teeth.

Mega Slowbro

When Slowbro Mega Evolves into Mega Slowbro, it becomes engulfed by the Shellder to the point where only its head, arms and tail are visible. The spiral Shellder now has an opening at its tip, allowing the tail of Slowbro to stick out, which it balances on due to its legs being engulfed. The spikes on the Shellder are now reduced to four on the bottom section of its body, with the dark spots only visible on its middle section.

Galarian Slowbro

The Galarian form of Slowbro has purple markings on its upper head and ears, tail, and arms. The "Shellder" that attaches to Kantonian Slowbro's tail is on Slowbro's left arm instead, being more similar to an arm cannon. The spikes on Shellder are larger and more conical.

Behavior

Kantonian

Kantonian Slowbro is typically rather lazy and unintelligent, but when the Shellder bites down on its tail (causing more venom to head to the brain), it becomes inspired for some reason. It is very peaceful and avoids confrontation most of the time. Slowbro are no longer able to fish with their tails and must, to their disdain, swim to catch food.

Galarian

Galarian Slowbro is more aggressive as the Shellder biting down on its arm causes it to Attack everything indiscriminately. While normally zoned out, it gets rather serious due to a stimulus jolt. The two organisms have some autonomy in controlling how Galarian Slowbro acts. By squeezing their Shellder's tongues, these Pokémon can cause them to shoot out a toxin liquid from the tips of their shells. However, the Shellder can also bite down when they sense danger, triggering their hosts to swing around the arms wildly while shooting toxins to both smash and poison indiscriminately. Because of this, these Pokémon can be quite dangerous to be around. By injecting venom into their bloodstreams (either by the parasite's or the host's volition), Galarian Slowbro can drastically sharpen their senses thanks to the venom's reaction with galaricin. This makes them incredibly quick on the draw, shooting enemies with great accuracy before they even prepare to attack.

Natural abilities

Kantonian Slowbro is implied to be able to use powerful psychic attacks it only uses when forced to. It is also somehow insensitive to pain due to Shellder biting on it, tying into its oblivious and own tempo abilities (which ignores infatuation and confusion). It hidden ability, regenerator, heals its slightly when withdrawn from battle.

Mega Slowbro's Shellder has become armor that is unscratchable, reflected in its Shell armor ability (which prevents critical hits on it), while it can move by jumping on its tail like a spring. The Slowpoke involved is virtually unchanged, aside from becoming stronger and more motivated.

Galarian Slowbro are surprisingly fast, reflected in their signature Quick Draw ability (which gives it chance to strike first). Their primary Attack method is shooting poison from its Shellder by pulling in the tongue of the latter.

Evolution

Slowbro evolves from Slowpoke starting at level 37. Since Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it can Mega Evolve into Mega Slowbro using its Mega Stone, Slowbronite.

Galarian Slowpoke evolves into Galarian Slowbro using a Galarica Cuff.

In the anime, Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro when a Shellder bites its tail. Slowking is an alternate evolution that happens when a Shellder clamps its head while wearing a King's Rock.

Pokédex entries

  • Red and Blue

The Shellder that latches onto Slowpoke's tail is said to feed on the host's leftover scraps.

  • Yellow

Lives lazily by the sea. If the Shellder on its tail comes off, it becomes a Slowpoke again.

  • Gold

If the tail-biting Shellder is thrown off in a harsh battle, it reverts to being an ordinary Slowpoke.

  • Silver

Naturally dull to begin with, it lost its ability to feel pain due to Shellder's seeping poison.

  • Crystal

An attached Shellder won't let go because of the tasty flavor that oozes out of its tail.

  • Ruby

Slowbro's tail has a Shellder firmly attached with a bite. As a result, the tail can't be used for fishing anymore. This causes Slowbro to grudgingly swim and catch prey instead.

  • Sapphire

Slowbro's tail has a Shellder firmly attached with a bite. As a result, the tail can't be used for fishing anymore. This causes Slowbro to grudgingly swim and catch prey instead.

  • FireRed

When a Slowpoke went hunting in the sea, its tail was bitten by a Shellder. That made it evolve into Slowbro.

  • LeafGreen

The Shellder that latches onto Slowpoke's tail is said to feed on the host's leftover scraps.

  • Emerald

Its tail has a Shellder firmly attached with a bite. As a result, the tail can't be used for fishing anymore. This forces it to reluctantly swim and catch prey.

  • Alpha Sapphire

Slowbro's tail has a Shellder firmly attached with a bite. As a result, the tail can't be used for fishing anymore. This causes Slowbro to grudgingly swim and catch prey instead.

  • Sun

It spaces out while gazing at the sea. With Shellder's poison flowing through its body, it becomes even spacier.
Mega Evolution: All the energy from Mega Evolution poured into the Shellder on its tail, leaving Slowpoke to be swallowed whole.

  • Moon

Whenever Shellder bites down hard on its tail, it gives Slowbro a flash of inspiration...which it forgets a moment later.
Mega Evolution: When bathed in the energy of Mega Evolution, Shellder converts into impregnable armor. There is virtually no change in Slowpoke.

  • Ultra Sun

Spacing out is basically all it does. It turns back into Slowpoke if its tail, along with Shellder, breaks off.
Mega Evolution: Tremendous energy strengthened the power of the Shellder on its tail, but it doesn’t really affect Slowpoke.

  • Ultra Moon

Shellder, in its greed to suck out more and more sweetness from Slowbro’s tail, has metamorphosed into a spiral-shaped shell.
Mega Evolution: Having been swallowed whole by Shellder, Slowbro now has an iron defense. It’s pretty comfortable in there, too.

  • Let's Go, Pikachu!

Lives lazily by the sea. If the Shellder on its tail comes off, it becomes a Slowpoke again.
Mega Evolution: Under the influence of Shellder's digestive fluids, Slowpoke has awakened, gaining a great deal of power–and a little motivation to boot.

  • Let's Go, Eevee!

Lives lazily by the sea. If the Shellder on its tail comes off, it becomes a Slowpoke again.
Mega Evolution: Under the influence of Shellder's digestive fluids, Slowpoke has awakened, gaining a great deal of power–and a little motivation to boot.

  • Sword

Kantonian Form: Slowpoke became Slowbro when a Shellder bit on to its tail. Sweet flavors seeping from the tail make the Shellder feel as if its life is a dream.
Galarian Form: A Shellder bite set off a chemical reaction with the spices inside Slowbro's body, causing Slowbro to become a Poison-type Pokémon.

  • Shield

Kantonian Form: Being bitten by a Shellder shocked this Pokémon into standing on two legs. If the Shellder lets go, it seems Slowbro will turn back into a Slowpoke.
Galarian Form: If this Pokémon squeezes the tongue of the Shellder biting it, the Shellder will launch a toxic liquid from the tip of its shell.

Trivia

  • Of Pokémon evolution this one has the least amount of visible changes, perhaps to reflect the laziness suggested in its previous form's name.
    • It is also one of the few Pokémon able to revert to its previous state.
      • Despite it being a commonly known and accepted fact that Shellder triggers its evolution, mentioned in most of its Pokédex entries, Slowbro's evolution from Slowpoke has nothing to do with Shellder in the core series, unlike how the evolution of Mantyke requires a Remoraid.
  • Mega Slowbro is tied with Cloyster for the highest Defense base stat of all Water-type Pokémon.
    • Mega Slowbro has the highest base Defense stat of all Psychic-type Pokémon.
  • Slowbro's Pokédex entries state that if the Shellder is removed, it will revert to its Slowpoke form.
    • This is the only mentioning of a Pokémon possibly devolving anywhere in the Pokémon games, aside from a card in the game versions of the TCG.
    • Galarian Slowbro and Galarian Slowking are the only Pokémon with a Poison/Psychic type combination.
  • The Galarian form of Slowbro's pre-evolution is the only single-type Pokémon that gains a secondary type upon evolution, and that the secondary type becomes the primary type.
  • It is the only Mega-evolving Pokémon with a Galarian form.
  • Although Galarian Slowbro is said to Attack indiscriminately, it can't learn Outrage.

Origin

Slowbro's personality and donning of a shell may reference hermit crabs, as such animals are usually known to lie around with a shell attached to their backsides. Its physical appearance takes some aspects of semi-aquatic mammals such as hippopotamuses and otters. It may also be based on the Japanese tale of the sazae-oni, a sea demon usually identified by its spiny turban shell.

Shellder latching onto Slowpoke's tail after it is dipped in the water may be a reference to leeches and how they often attach themselves to victims laying in water. The behavior of the attached Shellder also reflects leeches, usually refusing to let go due to the flavor of Slowpoke's tail.

Galarian Slowbro mostly takes the same inspirations from its Kantonian counterpart, though its Poison-typing may reference the cone snail, a species of snail that is highly venomous. It may also take inspiration from arm cannons, a fictional weapon often used in media (such as Mega Man and the Mega Buster) as it uses the attached Shellder to shoot out various attacks.

Etymology

Slowbro's name comes from the words slow (or possibly Slowpoke, its pre-evolution) and bro (short for brother, referencing the relationship between it and its Shellder).

Its Japanese name, Yadoran, was inspired by famous Yugoslav singer-songwriter and Konami collaborator Jadranka Stojaković, whose first name transliterated into Japanese is ヤドランカ (Yadoranka).[2]
