Rhyperior

Rhyperior (Japanese: ドサイドン, HepburnDosaidon) (RYE-PEER-ee-or[1]) is a Ground/Rock-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology

Physiology

Rhyperior is a large, dark grayish-brown Pokémon with two horns: one on its nose, and another one above it. It has a club-like tail and its hide is partially covered by orange, rocky plates. It has blade-like protrusions on its elbows and has holes in the palms of its hands which works as a cannon or a gun. Rhyperior can insert rocks and boulders into its arms through the holes in its hands and then fire them like bullets. However, it will occasionally insert and fire Geodude by accident. It also appears to have two thick, rectangular rocks above its eyes, resembling heavy eyebrows. Rhyperior lives far up in the mountains.

Gender differences

The upper horn is smaller on a female Rhyperior.

Behavior

Rhyperior live in areas with lots of exposed, loose rocks. They sometimes make their way into artificial quarries to use the mined stone in battle. They can shove rocks into the holes in their hands; by quickly tightening and expanding their arm muscles, they can launch out these rocks like missiles. This is how they use devastating moves like Rock Wrecker to overpower opponents. Sometimes, they may launch Geodude or Roggenrola camouflaging as boulders, mistaking them for real rocks. Their durable carapaces are capable of withstanding volcanic eruptions. In battle, they will often wait for the foe to strike first, letting the attacks bounce harmlessly off of their bodies before counterattacking with their drills. Rhyperior also use these drills to dig through mountains and cliffs. They can then use the rubble as more ammo for their attacks. If threatened without any rocks available, they are still more than capable of defending themselves. Rhyperior can use their powerful drills to use Horn Drill, for instance, to take down foes. They can also swing their club-like tails at opponents when threatened; their immense weight often makes such blows crippling, if not outright fatal.

Evolution

Rhyperior is the evolved form of Rhydon. A Rhydon can only evolve into a Rhyperior by trade while holding the Protector item.

    Trivia

    Origin

Rhyperior appears to be based on rhinoceros' just like its pre-evolutions Rhyhorn and Rhydon while also sharing some similarities with golems. Its tail is similar to that of the Ankylosaurus, a dinosaur with a club-like tail. It also resembles a miner or construction worker with its armor resembling a hard hat and safety vest or overalls. Its ability to fire rocks from its hands may be an allusion to the Beast Wars character Rhinox, who could transform into a rhinoceros and whose signature weapons were a pair of gatling guns attached to his hands.

    Etymology

Rhyperior comes from rhinoceros, rhyolite and superior.
