What is the inspiration behind Suicune's design? toggle section
Suicune, a Pokemon, combines elements of leopards and wolves in its design. Muneo Saitō, the designer, described the process as 'leopard-like', possibly referencing Fujin, the Japanese Wind God, known for his leopard skin. This ties to Suicune's moniker, the 'North Wind'. Wolf-like features include a long muzzle and slender body. Suicune's color is sky blue, adorned with white rhombuses and a white underbelly. It sports an aquamarine hexagram-shaped crest on its head and a purple mane.

Anime

Pokémon 4Ever

Suicune appeared alongside Celebi as the title character in the movie Pokémon 4Ever. In the movie, Suicune purified the lake to restore Celebi and prevent it from dying.

Zoroark: Master of Illusions

Zoroark, with its ability, Illusion, took the form of Suicune (Along with Entei and Raikou) to cause an uproar in Crown City so that Kodai can freely look for the Ripple of Time.

Shiny counterparts of the Legendary Beasts were guardians of Crown City, coming to aid Crown City in times of need. A Shiny Suicune came to Crown City with the other guardians to stop Zoroark (Which they thought was the enemy), but the trio were stopped by wild Pokémon that defended Zoroark, convincing the trio that Zoroark was not evil. The guardians later scared off Kodai after the Ripple of Time was revealed to be an illusion by Zoroark.

Crossover

Super Smash Bros. series

Suicune SSB4 Wii U

Suicune is one of the Poké Ball Pokémon in the Super Smash Bros. series, first appearing in Super Smash Bros. Melee and returning in all later installments of the series. Upon being summoned, Suicune uses Blizzard, creating an icy whirlwind around itself that freezes any nearby opponents. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Suicune attacks using Aurora Beam instead, in which it Suicune fires a horizontal laser across the screen that heavily damages any opponents in its path. Suicune is amongst the Legendary Pokémon that can appear from a Master Ball in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Trivia

  • Suicune is the only one of the Legendary Beast trio to be a version mascot.
  • Ash saw a Suicune at the beginning of his Johto Journey, making this the second time Ash has seen a legendary Johto Pokémon at the beginning of his journey (The first time being Ho-Oh in the first episode).
  • Suicune is the only Pokémon that is not an Ice-type that learns Blizzard by leveling up. Learning the move at level 85, learns Blizzard the latest of all those who learn it by leveling up.
  • Suicune is the only legendary mascot that is not banned from competitive battles.
  • Suicune is the slowest, the physically weakest, but the most defensive of the legendary beasts.
  • A Shadow Suicune is one of the Pokémon whom Wes has to Snag and purify in Pokémon Colosseum; in particular, Wes has to Snag it from Cipher Admin Venus.

Origin

When asked if Suicune was based on any particular animal, Muneo Saitō described Suicune's creation process to come together easily and fell into a motif that felt "leopard-like".[2][3] This maybe a tribute to Fujin (the Japanese God of the Wind, complimenting Suicune's nickname as the "North Wind") who wore a leopard skin.

Along with its design base being a leopard, combined with the idea of Suicune representing the north wind, it also may have been derived from Fūjin, the Shinto god of the wind, who wears leopard skin. Its mane also looks similar to aurora. Its build, crest/horn, and ability to walk on and purify water bear similarities to the Qilin. Its mane may be based on the aurora borealis.

Suicune could also be based on the yokai Suiko, or "water tiger", as it has many tiger-like characteristics.

Etymology

Suicune may come from sui (water), suisho (crystal), and kun (monarch).

Suicune's English spelling coincidentally appears similar to the word sluice, referring to a gate that controls a water channel, and can also refer to the act of rinsing and splashing cold water onto something and has purification and cleansing meaning to it, from gold prospecting to the removal of waste from hospitals.
