Cerulean Cave (Japanese: ハナダのどうくつ, HepburnHanada no Dōkutsu), also officially named the "Unknown Dungeon" (Japanese: ななしのどうくつ, HepburnNanashi no Dōkutsu) is a location introduced in Generation I.

Description

Cerulean Cave is in the northwest of Cerulean City in the Kanto region. A level 70 Mewtwo is encountered on the first floor.

By default, there is a non-playable character blocking the entrance to Cerulean Cave, since entering it requires one to be victorious in the Pokémon League. In Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, this goes even farther in that one has to also complete the Sevii Islands quest.

In Pokémon Gold Version and Pokémon Silver Version, the entrance to Cerulean Cave is flooded by water. A Hiker in Cerulean City tells the player's character that a nearby cave, referring to Cerulean Cave, has caved in recently. The Berserk Gene is one of the more notable items that can be obtained.

Trivia

  • In Generation I, any Pokémon that can only be found in the Cerulean Cave is listed as "area unknown" in the Pokédex. This was fixed in Generation III, however. Whether this was intended or just a glitch is unknown (most likely a glitch).
  • Though its design varies with each iteration, the version of it found in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver is very similar to the one in the original Pokémon Red and Green, which was never released outside of Japan. The only difference is the Generation III addition of Rock Smash boulders.
  • In Generation II, Cerulean Cave was inaccessible. A NPC nearby states how the cave collapsed in between Generation I and Generation II.
